Weekend H.S. roundup: Manchester freshman sweeps sprint titles at Greater Hartford meet

Freshman Samiya Eady of Manchester swept the girls 100 and 200 meters at the 91st Greater Hartford Outdoor Track and Field Invitational at East Hartford High Saturday.

The East Hartford boys won the team title for the seventh time, but the first since 1977.

Eady clocked 12.24 seconds in the 100 and 25.13 in the 200, edging sophomore Nacquelia Fletcher of Bloomfield in both races.

Senior Daniel Kennedy of Tolland won the boys 100 in 10.85 seconds, beating second-place Arlon Poteat of Manchester by .13 of a second. Junior Joseph Fahey of RHAM won the javelin with a throw of 166 feet, 6 inches, beating his previous personal best by more than 15 feet.

Maxwell Czarnecki of RHAM won the 300 hurdles in 41.43 seconds. On the girls' side, RHAM's Isabella Mondo won the 3200.

Boys: Cole Robertson (Tolland) third in the 400; Dominic Pena (Glastonbury) and Stephen Smith (East Hartford) finished 2-3 in the 800; Colby Bornstein (Tolland) third in the 3200; Dayon Davis and Davian Johnson (East Hartford) finished 2-3 in the 110 hurdles.

Girls: Keira Stewart (East Hartford) third in the 200; Kyrah Smith (East Hartford) third in the 400; Kelley MacElhiney and Jacqueline Dudus 3-4 in the 800; Lila Garbet (Glastonbury) second in the 1600.

BOYS LACROSSE

SOMERS 14, HOLY CROSS 7. Saturday in Waterbury, Somers freshman Liam Grondin helped break open a close game by winning multiple faceoffs early in the second half as the Spartans (7-8) qualified for the Class S tournament, giving Somers its 29th consecutive postseason appearance.

Andrew Cardwell and Kalvin Long each had a hat trick and Liam Grondin, Tait Gaudet, and Cooper Leonard added two goals apiece for Somers. It was tied at 5 at halftime before the Spartans scored five unanswered goals at the start of the second half.

Evan Poulin had 12 saves for Somers (7-8). The Spartans' Trent Beggs, Greg Mendez and Jimmy Maskill played well defensively. Holy Cross is 9-5.

SOFTBALL

WOODSTOCK 11, SOMERS 2. Host Woodstock had 11 hits and took advantage of six errors by Somers (10-8) in a nonconference win Saturday.

Woodstock (12-6) scored two runs in the second, five in the third, and four in the fourth and was error-free. Grace Chagnon had two of Somers' five hits.
