This weekend: Oktoberfest brings Bavarian cheer plus the season kickoff for the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra

There's a chill in the air and fall activities are in full swing. It's still just September but this is the weekend Anchorage will celebrate Oktoberfest, with Bavarian food, culture and music at the forefront. Plus the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra kicks off its season with a new musical director. If you're got different musical tastes, there are options from Scotland to Seattle as well as local talent.
Skerryvore: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Discovery Theatre, 621 W. Sixth Ave.
From the Scottish island of Tiree, this band has gained notoriety by blending folk, rock, and Americana along with Scottish traditions like bagpipes and intricate drum beats. Tickets for the show start at $44.
Oktoberfest: 2-9 p.m. Saturday, Egan Convention Center, 555 W. Fifth Ave.
Celebrate Bavarian culture, heritage, food and drink this weekend. Alaska Blaskapelle and the Alaska Polka Chips will be performing. Tickets for adults and kids 12 and up are $20, kids under 12 are free. Food and drinks are not included in admission price.
Chris Hawk: 7 p.m. Saturday, Cafecito Bonito, 6307 Debarr Rd.
Born and raised in Anchorage, Hawk will perform in the latest installment of the R&B Neo Soul Small Concert Series. He was featured his first musical project at age seven and signed with Satellite Heart Records in 2018. General admission is $15 with other ticketing options available.

Anchorage Symphony Orchestra: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, 21 W. Sixth Ave.
The opening night for the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra will feature violinist Bella Hristova with Elizabeth Schulze taking the podium as the new music director. The works of Mary D. Watkins, Leonard Bernstein and Antonin Dvorak will be performed. Ticket prices for adults are $27-$52, youth $12.50-$24.75, seniors $24.50-$46.50 and streaming only $39.
Ayron Jones: 8 p.m. Saturday, Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center, 600 W. Seventh Ave.
Rocker Ayron Jones will bring his band to Anchorage on Saturday for an all-ages show. A native of Seattle, Jones released his album "Child Of The State" last year. Tickets are $40.
Moose Loop Virtual Race: Saturday-Sept. 30
This second annual race celebrates the world-class urban trails that loop around the city of Anchorage. To top it off the race route is in the shape of a moose. Participants can run, walk or bike in a number of categories: 5K, 10K, Mini Moose (12.75K), or Mighty Moose (51.5K Moose Loop). Registration cost in $35.
