What to do this weekend: Attend a Burger Battle, go to a concert or art gallery

The 100-degree heat may be over, at least for now, so it could be safe to venture outdoors for events like the annual Burger Battle or the Back to School bash at the Sedgwick County Zoo, both of which are happening this weekend.

Prefer to stay indoors? This weekend’s entertainment calendar holds plenty of events for that crowd, too, including several First Friday art crawl events.

Following is a look at some of the fun events happening in Wichita this weekend, both indoors and out:

Summer Mini-Fest

9 p.m., Public at the Brickyard, 129 N. Rock Island

The Brickyard, an open-air bar and music venue in Old Town, is putting on a Summer Mini-Fest concert that will start at 9 p.m. Friday and will feature four local bands: Josue Estrada Band, Milkwave, Vehicles and Billy Ray & The Buttercutter. Doors to the show open at 8 p.m., and admission is $10.

First Friday opening

6 p.m. Friday, 2721 E. Central

It’s First Friday weekend, and the Mulberry Art Gallery in Wichita is one of several that will be putting on special events and exhibition openings. Mulberry’s event will feature the opening of Kansas native Kamela Eaton’s show “I Dream of Jeannie: A Visual Love Letter to My Family.” The show is inspired by old family snapshots and vintage photographs, and its name is a tribute to the artist’s mother, Irma Jean, called “Jeannie” by friends and family. The opening is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the gallery, which is just above Fidelity Bank inside Revolutsia. Admission is free.

Clutch in concert

7 p.m Friday, Wave, 650 E. Second St.

Rock band Clutch will bring its “No Stars Above” tour to Wichita’s Wave venue on Friday night. The band, which will perform on Wave’s outdoor stage, has been around since 1991 and is known for songs like “Passive Restraints” and “Psychic Warfare.” The bill also will include opening acts Dinosaur Jr. and Red Fang. The show starts at 7 p.m., and doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $45-$65 and waveict.com

Discount Day at the Zoo

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd.

The Sedgwick County Zoo is inviting Wichita to end the summer at its Back to School Bash on Saturday, when people can get discounted admission of $3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members will get in free with membership cards and photo IDs. Tickets can be purchased at the zoo entrance or at scz.org.

Burger Battle

5-9 p.m. Saturday, Capitol Federal Amphitheater, 1507 E. Central, Andover

The annual Burger Battle, a fundraiser for KETCH, happens from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Capitol Federal Amphitheater in Andover. It will feature several local burger vendors battling it out for the Best Burger trophy and bragging rights. The list of competitors this year includes Burger Central, Dempsey’s Burger Pub, Fizz Burgers & Bottles, Jumbo’s Beef & Brew, Red Robin, Southeast Carryout, and two new Wichita restaurants: Forge and The Appetite. Tickets are $30, free for 6 and under. A general admission ticket includes unlimited samples, or an upgrade to the $50 VIP ticket also includes two drinks, a cookie and reserved parking.
