What to do this weekend: See Chris Stapleton, float the Arkansas, eat tacos at the zoo

June is coming to a close, and the Wichita calendar is offering plenty of ways to enjoy summer this weekend, including a Big Float on the Arkansas River, an outdoor market and a Mexican food fiesta at the zoo.

Prefer to stay indoors? Superstar Chris Stapleton will be performing at Intrust Bank Arena, and anime fans will be gathering at the Hyatt Regency.

Here’s a look at some of the fun activities happening in Wichita this weekend.

Chris Stapleton in concert

7 p.m. Friday, Intrust Bank Arena, 500 E. Waterman

Music superstar and eight-time Grammy winner Chris Stapleton is bringing his “All American Road Show” to Intrust Bank Arena on Friday with opening acts Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives as well as Allen Stone. Stapleton’s biggest hits include “Starting Over,” “Tennessee Whiskey” and “You Should Probably Leave.” The show starts at 7 p.m., and doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $79-$140, and only a few remain. They’re available at www.selectaseat.com, by calling 316-755-7328 or in person at the Select-a-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.

Chimps & Salsa at the Zoo

Noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Sedgwick County Zoo,

Chimps & Salsa, an annual Mexican food festival put on by the Sedgwick County Zoo, is from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The event will feature food for purchase from places like Tacos tj 664, Los Compadres, La Hacienda and Alondra’s Tacos, and attendees can also enjoy live music from five different norteño bands. Attendees also can take advantage of free face painting and can visit the zoo animals. The first 200 people through the door get a free Chimps & Salsa T-shirt. Regular zoo admission applies. Children 2 and under get in free.

Anime Festival

Friday-Sunday, Hyatt Regency Wichita, 400 W. Waterman

Anime Festival Wichita returns this weekend and will feature several cosplay contests, skits and more. The festival will also feature anime voice actors like Phil Parsons, known for voicing Nappa in the Funimation dub of the Dragon Ball series. The festival is a three-day event that starts at 5 p.m. on Friday and continues Saturday and Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Wichita. More information and ticket details can be found at afwcon.org

Time to shop

Shop & Grub 5-10 p.m. Friday at Exploration Place Festival Plaza, 300 N. McLean; Flea Market 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Kansas Star Arena, Mulvane

In a mood to shop? Two monthly Wichita shopping events are on for this weekend. One is the monthly Shop & Grub market, which this weekend will put on its first nighttime event. It’ll happen from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday at Exploration Place’s Festival Plaza and will include lots of vendors, food and entertainment. Night markets also are planned for July 21 and Aug. 18. Admission is free. Also, it’s Flea Market weekend again, and it returns to Kansas Star Casino Arena in Mulvane after trying out different venues the last few months. The market, which will feature more than 200 vendors selling comics, artwork, jewelry, toys and more, runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. A one-day ticket, available at the door, is $3 and a two-day ticket is $5. Kids 12 and under get in free.

“Little Red Hen”

10 a.m. and noon Friday and Saturday, Crown Uptown Theatre, 3207 E. Douglas

Wichita Children’s Theatre is back this weekend with another summer production. “Little Red Hen” will be staged Friday and Saturday at the Crown Uptown Theatre. The show, appropriate for ages 2 and up, is performed by the theatre’s professional adult acting company. Show times are 10 a.m. and noon both days, and pizza will be served at 11:30 a.m. Show-only tickets are $9, and tickets that include pizza are $11. Call 316-262-2282 for tickets.

Float the Arkansas

1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Old Cowtown Museum, 1865 W. Museum Blvd.

Wichita Clean Streams’ Saturday event The Big Float will give Wichitans the opportunity to float down the Arkansas River then enjoy food, live music and more. Participants will check in at the Wichita Clean Streams tent east of Old Cowtown, 1865 W. Museum Blvd., and can either rent a tube and life jacket or bring their own. They’ll then float down the river through downtown Wichita. The take-out point will be at the WSU River Vista Boathouse Dock, where there will be a beach party with live music, drinks, food, kid’s activities and more. Floaters can start between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Online registration is available through Friday at wichitacleanstreams.com or onsite on Saturday. Registration and rentals are $25, and registration only is $15. Participants must be 18 or older, though ages 16 and up can float with a legal guardian.
