Kinston and Lenoir County will most likely see below-freezing temperatures and a wintry mix of freezing rain and possible snow over the coming weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Newport.

The NWS issued a winter storm watch advisory at 5 a.m. Wednesday for Lenoir, Martin, Pitt, Washington, Tyrrell, Greene, Beaufort, Hyde, Duplin, Jones, Pamlico, Craven, Carteret and Onslow counties beginning late Thursday until Saturday morning.

A map released by the NWS showed projected ice accumulation for Kenansville, Kinston, Greenville and Williamston at 0.1-0.25 inches. Snow up to 2 inches is possible in Lenoir County, according to the NWS.

The storm is forecast to arrive late Thursday night with the highest impacts likely FridayIt is predicted to affect much of eastern North Carolina away from the coastal areas, and could result in numerous scattered power outages.

Temperatures are expected to be at their lowest Friday with the high being only 28 degrees and the low at 25 going into Saturday morning. Winds will be at their peak Friday morning with 20-25 mph gusts.

NWS Meteorologist Ryan Ellis said because the temperature will be so low in Lenoir County on Friday and will not get above freezing the next day, driving will be more hazardous than it was during last week’s storm.

“The potential for (weather) impacts is significant at this time, with travel and power outages being a concern,” Ellis said.

NWS Meteorologist Ryan Sucheck said it is not uncommon during certain atmospheric conditions for one winter storm to lay the groundwork for another, even in a week’s time.

Sucheck said the coastal impacts would be mostly rain and wind.
