Weekend things to do: Beer and beards for good, Jason Mraz in Boca Raton, Oyster Fest tickets

Greg Young and Davy Martin are two gregarious gents of local community-shaping renown who seem to have their hearts in the same place. This weekend, the rest of their bodies will be in the same place for a good cause in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Young is best-known as the co-owner (with Kevin Grande) of Noblemen’s Cut & Shave, the buzzy Progresso barbershop, and also for his work offering free grooming sessions to the homeless and underprivileged via his Backpack Barber Foundation.

On Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m., Young will bring his backpack filled with barber tools to Martin’s Orchestrated Minds Brewing in Fort Lauderdale’s Dorsey-Riverbend neighborhood for a back-to-school event. The afternoon will include free haircuts and hair braiding, plus free backpacks, hygiene kits and school supplies for the first 50 kids who show up.

SoFlo Eatery food truck will offer kids’ meals ($5), and Jeremiah’s Italian Ice will have free Italian ices for kids. There also will be food-truck offerings for adults, OMB beer specials, a DJ and a vintage pop-up thrift shop. For more information, visit Instagram.com/thebackpackbarberfoundation.

Civic engagement has been a consistent vibe at Orchestrated Minds, where Martin and wife Jaime (a lawyer) this week set the “triumphant return” of a New England double IPA called Change Is Necessary on draft and to-go cans.

The beer was brewed and named during social-justice acrimony after the killing of George Floyd, which forced debate on issues felt most acutely in places such as Dorsey-Riverbend. In an Instagram post this week about Change Is Necessary, the Martins offered a reminder of the plight of at-risk neighborhoods, especially in the face of relentless gentrification in the city.

“Bringing awareness to inequality and social injustice will always be important to everyone associated with OMB,” they wrote.

In addition to uniquely flavorful beer and a valuable social conscience, the Martins have good taste in friends. They include Takeshi Kamioka, the revered local chef who will set up his cult-fave Kaminari Ramen food truck at Orchestrated Minds on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m.

Weekend movie:It is a fitting bit of irony that a couple days after the death of singer Rodriguez, subject of the Oscar-winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man,” a similarly unlikely tale of lost music serendipitously rescued from obscurity comes to a handful of South Florida theaters on Thursday.

The true story brought to life in “Dreamin’ Wild” is ostensibly about two teenage brothers, Donnie and Joe Emerson, sons of a hard-working Pacific Northwest farm family, who record a rock-soul album in their makeshift home studio in 1979. Despite emotional and monetary support from the family, the album titled “Dreamin’ Wild” is ignored, and nearly all of the farm is lost.

But 30 years later a vinyl scavenger stumbles across the album in a cut-out bin, is shocked by its odd and precocious beauty, and gets it into hands of music-industry connections. This eventually leads to its reissue on Light in the Attic Records (which also released “Cold Fact” by Rodriguez) and a wave of critical praise. But were Donnie and Joe ready for what came next?

In the steady hands of filmmaker Bill Pohlad (he directed the Brian Wilson biopic “Love & Mercy”), “Dreamin’ Wild” quietly blossoms into a poignant portrait of a family and its dreams, sacrifices and love. Oyster-palooza:Tickets just went on sale for Oyster Fest, the popular annual waterside party hosted by Coconuts and G&B Oyster Bar, coming to their tented parking lot on Fort Lauderdale beach on Oct. 6. Barbecue for a cause: Local chef and skateboarder Cory Bartle will be remembered during the Bartle BBQ Hang on Saturday, Aug. 26, at the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach. This is a new date for the original event, canceled by rain in June, which kicks off the Hanley Foundation‘s Cory Bartle Memorial Fund. Bartle died from an accidental overdose on Oct. 22 at age 34. The 3-6 p.m. events will include barbecue (donated by Sandy James Catering), skateboarding (there will be a half-pipe competition with prizes) and a demonstration by skateboard pro Kai Canduba.
