Weekend things to do (Father’s Day planner): Chappelle tickets, guitars, cookies and beer
Dads are like the lawn. Tend to us a little and we’re fine. Or don’t, and we’re still fine. Sometimes we start to look dry and patchy, maybe even a little dead, but the wet season rolls around (also known as football season) and we come back.
Once a year it’s good to fertilize. This is that time of year. Here are some ideas on things you can buy now and spread next weekend, on Father’s Day. A lot of it is in liquid form. Don’t worry about manure — we’re full of that.
Humor him
You’d win Father’s Day in my house (not hinting, just saying) with Dave Chappelle tickets. The uncompromising comedian, screenwriter and producer is doing three nights at Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood Aug. 6-8, with tickets ($390, $290, $215, $165 and $115) on sale 10 a.m. Friday at MyHRL.com. A venue presale began 10 a.m. Thursday through the Hard Rock Facebook and Twitter pages.
Meanwhile, Jim Jefferies will bring the Moist Tour to the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 9, with tickets ($39.75+) on sale at BrowardCenter.org. And Patton Oswalt will perform at Parker Playhouse on Dec. 27, with tickets on sale 10 a.m. Friday at ParkerPlayhouse.com.
Guitar kings
Prog rocker in the house? King Crimson, one of the most inventive bands of its time (Robert Fripp, best guitarist alive? Discuss.), is coming to Old School Square in downtown Delray Beach on July 23, with tickets on sale at noon Friday at AXS.com. Tickets will be sold in pods of four closest to the stage and another 1,200 individual seats on the lawn behind the pod zone. Visit OldSchoolSquare.com.
Another guitar king on his way to South Florida is Lindsay Buckingham, performing Sept. 30 at Parker Playhouse. Tickets ($37.50+) go on sale 10 a.m. Friday at ParkerPlayhouse.com.
The gift of music
Lingering COVID and supply-chain concerns prompted organizers of the vinyl-record hootenanny known as Record Store Day to have two drops of special releases in 2021, one Saturday and one July 17. More than a dozen South Florida record stores are taking part, including Sweat Records and Technique Records in Miami, Radio-Active Records in Fort Lauderdale, We Got the Beats in Oakland Park and Lauderhill, and Rust and Wax in West Palm Beach. Among new vinyl releases I’m looking for are live albums by the Ramones, Charlie Parker, Aretha Franklin and the Allman Brothers, in Duane Allman’s final concert before his death. Dad culture
Some dads are more refined than others, and the on-site shop at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale has a range of items that might appeal to that cultured guy in your house. Like the wooden flask (stainless steel inside, natural wood outside) etched with an anchor and the words “Down the hatch.” Or a similar flask layered with a gold skull. Fish tix
On Thursday (June 10), the Miami Marlins put single-game tickets on sale for the rest of the season, including series at loanDepot Park against such top teams as the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres. Also available are games with various bobblehead giveaways (Kevin Millar on Saturday, Sandy Alcantara on June 26, Miguel Rojas on July 10), the return of Bark at the Park, Beerfest days and more. Cookie him
One of the signatures of Crumbl Cookies, which opened its third South Florida location in Davie’s Tower Shops (2272 S. University Drive) about six weeks ago, is the youthful, Instagrammy vibe, from the bright, colorful shops themselves (occupied by a relentlessly cheerful staff) to the bright pink six-pack boxes they come in (why would you order less than six?). But these are definitely thick, rich, man-size gourmet cookies. The menu changes weekly, but they’ve all been very good. All of them. The good-old jams
He likes that old-time rock ‘n’ roll (it soothes his soul). Revolution Live in downtown Fort Lauderdale this week unveiled a special $30 pass for entry to all shows on its summer tribute band series that kicks off Saturday with Led Zep (members of In the Light of Led Zeppelin) and Sunday with Crazy Fingers (Grateful Dead tribute). Others include Hairdaze (’80s rock, June 19), Best of Both Worlds (Van Halen, June 26), Nirvanna (Nirvana, July 10), Audioecho (Chris Cornell, July 17), Roll the Stones (Rolling Stones, July 24), Take This to Your Grave (July 31, emo/punk pop). Tire him out
He likes big trucks (and he cannot lie). How about tickets to Monster Jam? The high-octane tour — featuring Grave Digger, Megalodon and the Scooby Doo truck — is returning to a full-capacity BB&T Center in Sunrise for two days Aug. 7-8. The Florida Panthers‘ entertaining playoff performance produced an instant folk hero in 20-year-old goalie Spencer Knight. NOTE: If you are looking for ideas about places to take Dad on Father’s Day Weekend, I will go on record as open to any of the suggestions below. But, again, I am the lawn. My kids walk all over me.
Happy Pappy’s Day
Looking ahead to next weekend, there’s no time like Father’s Day to visit the new Delray Beach restaurant Warren American Whiskey Kitchen and its collection of rare whiskey, including Pappy 25 bourbon, the “unicorn’s daddy” that goes for $2,000 per 2-ounce shot. But they have many more reasonably priced whiskeys to sip, some bottles for sale, and also offer memberships to the Warren Cocktail Club, which includes special whiskey events and discounts. Rare steakhouse
Maybe you’ll want a Father’s Day steak. One of my favorite reviews from my friend Mike Mayo, former Sun Sentinel food critic, was a 2017 celebration of Tropical Acres Steakhouse in Dania Beach. His opening paragraph: “People who want a flashy scene or the latest hot spot — a restaurant with Scandinavian furniture, Italian marble, glowing jellyfish tanks or fire pits overlooking the beach — probably should not venture into Tropical Acres Steakhouse. But those who want comforting basics such as plump shrimp cocktail with horseradish-spiked cocktail sauce that will snap sinuses to attention or tender filet mignon served on a sizzling hot plate that diners can slice and sear to a bit more doneness than ordered should hightail it to this South Florida institution.” Visit TropicalAcres.com.
A great burger
The Prohibition Burger at Tap 42 Craft Kitchen & Bar (at all eight locations) has Dad written all over it. The Tap 42 restaurant in Davie (2266 S. University Drive) is managed by one of the great dads of all time, Mark Hunter, who memorialized his kids’ love of “Baby Shark” (and his love of diving) in a “Daddy Shark” tattoo. The popular free picnic series called Starlight Musicals returns to downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Holiday Park on June 11 (Jimmy Buffett-oriented music by Caribbean Chillers). Talking fatherhood
In Miami, Fantasy Theatre Factory (at the new Sandrell Rivers Theater, 6103 NW Seventh Ave., in Little Haiti) on June 19 at2 p.m. will premiere “Dear Dad – An Exploration of Fatherhood,” dramatic readings by local actors of 12 monologues written by playwrights from across the United States.
