Weekend things to do: Duda Beat, Riley Green, Ziggy Stardust and wings galore in Lake Worth Beach

We know how to do big events in South Florida — we can throw a boat show and an air show, and we know how to Basel and Ultra and Tortuga and SunFest. But this is the time of year when summer-tested locals get together in smaller, organic ways to celebrate what’s here year-round.

We’re thinking of the Smoke & Sunset Neighborhood Cookout co-hosted by Tropical Smokehouse and Celis Juice Bar in West Palm Beach on Saturday, an event that is symbolic of an outgoing neighborly vibe, but also acknowledges the hip community of like-minded food and drink purveyors up and down Dixie Highway.

The Old Town Untapped series in Pompano Beach on Friday will include the high-intensity jams of locals Spred the Dub, a metaphor for the energy pulsing through the city these days.

Indie Craft Bazaar, which put founders Amanda Weiner and Chris Gaidry at the vanguard of the local curated flea-market trend nearly 15 years ago, returns to downtown Fort Lauderdale on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, the inaugural South Florida Wing Bash in Lake Worth Beach looks promising and will include as one of its judges the personable and perspicacious Jeffrey Lemmerman, better known as Cheffrey Eats, a very South Florida invention.

Bottom line, it’s a good weekend to get out in South Florida to remind yourself what this place is really all about.

SUNDAY

Ziggy’s farewell:On its 50th anniversary, a restored 4K version of D.A. Pennebaker’s David Bowie documentary “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture” will screen in several South Florida theaters this weekend. The film captures Bowie’s legendary July 3, 1973, concert in which he stunned 5,000 fans at London’s Hammersmith Odeon by revealing it would be his final performance as alter ego Ziggy. This version, with a new 5.1 theatrical mix by longtime producer Tony Visconti, also includes never-before-seen performances with guitar legend Jeff Beck. Visit DavidBowie.com/ziggy. Savor Cinema in downtown Fort Lauderdale will show the film at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday. At 6:30 p.m. both days, singer-songwriter Timothy LaRoque will play favorite Bowie songs onstage. Tickets cost $12, $10 for students and seniors. Visit FLIFF.com.

Weekend DJ:Mega-popular EDM star Illenium (American producer Nick Miller) will squeeze his 2023 global tour of stadiums, festivals and arenas into 7,000-seat Hard Rock Live in Hollywood at 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets start at $40+ for seats, $135+ for general-admission floor. Visit MyHRL.com.

Baseball & pickleball:These days the only game hotter than the baseball being played by the Miami Marlins is pickleball. On Sunday, the Marlins will host their first Pickleball Day before the 1:40 p.m. game against the Philadelphia Phillies, with the West Plaza at loanDepot Park turned into four courts for open play. As part of the festivities, which begin at 10 a.m., the Marlins are giving out a free USA Pickleball-approved paddle as part of a discounted ticket package, and professional pickleball players will be on hand to play exhibitions, rally with non-pros like you and offer tips. Anna Leigh Waters, the Delray Beach 16-year-old ranked No. 1 in the world, will throw out the first pitch. Visit Marlins.com.
