For an area that has former high school stars return as professional players all the time, this weekend offers something that doesn’t involve a ball.

Led by the former lead trumpet for the nationally renowned Dillard Center for the Arts jazz ensemble, the Anthony Hervey Quintet is the headliner for a Friday night installment of Jazz at The Circuit, a performance space on Fort Lauderdale’s Sistrunk Boulevard. The free series is presented by the Broward County Cultural Division in partnership with the Jazz Education Community Coalition and Destination Sistrunk.

Hervey, who grew up in Miramar, played at DCA when the orchestra was dominating the prestigious Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center in New York, the so-called Super Bowl of high school jazz bands, winning first-place honors in 2011 and 2012. A 2020 Juilliard graduate, as a professional Hervey has performed with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Jon Batiste and Michael Bublé.

With his impressive band (saxophonist Nigel Hervey, pianist Tal Cohen, bassist Dion Kerr and drummer Harvel Nakundi), Hervey will feature music from his debut album, “Words From My Horn,” released June 9 on the Outside in Music label.

The album — an evocative and confidently spun kaleidoscope of impulses and influences — is well worth seeking out.

Opening with “Crystal Stair,” a carousel of boastful muscularity, other highlights on the album include the nimble playfulness of “Du-Rag”; “Smoky Cloud,” a simmering Latin groove layered with Hervey’s swinging vocal; and the title track, an incandescent joyride, at once too hot to touch and as cool as only jazz can get.

“I want people to be able to feel my music, I want people to be uplifted and inspired by my music,” Hervey says in a video about the recording. “This album is about how the power of sound can change the world.”

Accompanying Hervey on the album is his New York-based band: Isaiah J. Thompson on piano, Philip Norris on bass, Sarah Hanahan on alto saxophone and fellow Dillard jazz ensemble alum Miguel Russell on drums.
