Weekend things to do: Wookies, Morgan Wallen, Panthers, Heat and surfing over downtown Delray Beach

Is there a zestier place to be than in South Florida this weekend? It’s Star Wars Day on Thursday, but that’s a universal thing (I hear). Ditto Cinco de Mayo celebrations on Friday and the Kentucky Derby on Saturday — cocktail parties with different hats.

But in addition to all of that, here in the tip of America there’s an extra sensation, thanks to the celebrity pileup that is the Miami Grand Prix, watch parties for shocking playoff runs by both the Miami Heat and the Florida Panthers (Biggest surprise? Discuss.) and three days of SunFest in West Palm Beach. Oh, and Morgan Wallen.

Here’s a look at some of the weekend highlights. May the 4th (5th, 6th and 7th) be with you.

THURSDAY

Go fourth: On May the 4th, The Easton Rooftop Pool & Lounge in Fort Lauderdale’s Courtyard by Marriott, on the edge of Flagler Village, will kick off a summer movie series with a free poolside screening of “Star Wars” at 8 p.m. Thursday. There will be lounge seating around the pool as the film is shown on a floating 20-foot screen. There also will be floaties in the pool, if you get the urge to cool off, and space-themed drink specials and bar bites featured all night. One note, the Easton crowd may not be nerdy enough to know this, but fans are sticklers for referencing “Star Wars” films by their complete and proper titles, in this case the original is “Stars Wars: Episode IV – The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” Visit TheEastonFTL.com.

Is that a lightsaber in your pocket?Kapow Noodle Bar locations in Boca Raton and West Palm Beach will host Star Wars Day parties all day on Thursday with the original trilogy playing on a loop, “Star Wars” cosplay (with prizes) and a limited-edition “Star Wars”-themed cocktails. The mind reels. Visit Facebook.com/kapownoodlebar.

Cool for Cats: Tin Roof in downtown Delray Beach will try to have it both ways, with a “Star Wars” trivia contest at 6 p.m. in the Green Room and a watch party for the Panthers-Leafs game on the patio beginning at 6:30 p.m. The sound will be on, and you’ll get 15% off your bill if you are wearing Panthers’ gear. Visit TinRoofDelrayBeach.com. … Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, longtime home for Florida Panthers fans in Broward County — see their Cats-dedicated beer, Gloves Off — will naturally be hosting a watch party Thursday night. Visit FunkyBuddha.com.

Farewell tour: Grammy-winning Puerto Rican reggaeton stars Wisin y Yandel bring their farewell tour to Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood at 8 p.m. Thursday. Tickets start at $45+ at MyHRL.com.

Hard country: Genre-defying country singer-rapper Jelly Roll will never be confused with Morgan Wallen (Post Malone, maybe) but he was the talk of this year’s CMT Awards with three wins for his song/video for “Son of a Sinner.” Jelly Roll will perform at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s The Stage at Coco at 8 p.m. Thursday. Tickets start at $70+ at SeminoleCoconutCreekCasino.com.

FRIDAY

SunFest yourself: Back before there was an Ultra or a Tortuga, even a Langerado (Google it up), the defining annual music festival in South Florida was SunFest, which returns for its 40th edition this Friday through Sunday on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront. It’s been trimmed back to three days this year, but still has an energy to suit every vibe, from modern exuberance (The Chainsmokers, The Killers, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Flo Rida) and laidback chilling (Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley) to general jumping around (311, Dropkick Murphys, All Time Low). Also look out for Boynton Beach reggae band Vibes Farm on Sunday. Tickets start at $90 for single-day GA, $170 for a three-day GA pass. There are also plenty of VIP options. Visit SunFest.com.

He is Morgan Wallen: The biggest tour of 2023 — for people who don’t “get” Taylor Swift — is Morgan Wallen’s One Night at a Time World Tour, which stops at iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach at 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets are, shall we say, scarce. If you check the show’s page at LiveNation.com, you see a couple of Platinum-level seats for more than $1,000 each out the door. Resale sites such as Stubhub have a few lawn seats in the $300 to $400 range.

Cinco de Margo: The 2023 Margarita Festival, hosted by The Restaurant People, will take place in the buzzy courtyard at downtown Fort Lauderdale hotspot YOLO on Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. All your friends will be there: Don Julio, Casamigos, Patron, Tequila 512, Ilegal Mezcal, Lunazul … to name just a few. Admission is $35 and includes unlimited margaritas from 6 to 8:30 p.m. VIP costs $75 and includes early entry at 5:30 p.m. and access to the VIP area, with food and premium tequila samples. Guests will be given a token to vote for the People’s Choice Margarita. Visit MargaritaFest2023.eventbrite.com.

JoBros back again (and again): The Jonas Brothers are at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood at 8 p.m. Friday, with tickets starting at $155+ at MyHRL.com. Also of interest to JoBro fans, the trio has scheduled a stop at Kaseya Center in Miami on Oct. 14 during their upcoming 35-date stadium and arena tour. Registration for Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan presale is continuing through 11:59 p.m. Saturday. The presale begins on Tuesday, May 9, with the general sale of any remaining tickets at 10 a.m. Friday, May 12. For information, visit JonasBrothers.com.

Weekend DJs:You may have heard about the Miami Grand Prix car races at Hard Rock Stadium this weekend, formally known as Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix 2023: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. As you might imagine, clubs and restaurants down south are hosting all kinds of glitzy, celebrity, DJ-y parties. But we get some, too. Hybrid nightclub/dayclub DAER at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood is hosting a killer Race Week lineup that includes Deadmau5 (doors open at 10 p.m. Friday, DAER nightclub) and Joe Jonas (10 p.m. Friday, DAER dayclub), DJ Diesel/Shaquille O’Neal (10 p.m. Saturday, DAER nightclub), Cedric Gervais (midnight Saturday, DAER dayclub) and Kaskade (midnight Sunday, DAER nightclub). Get tickets at HardRockNightlife.com/calendar.

SATURDAY

Your new favorite nobody: If you look at the Kentucky Derby, which happens at around 7 p.m. Saturday, as an opportunity to cocktail with friends in jaunty, hat-mandatory ensembles that you never get to wear, you need to meet “local nobody” Ms. Darcy Rey (her words). The elusive Wilton Manors personality and performer is throwing her second annual Derby party at the Fort Lauderdale (Flagler Village) location of Batch New Southern Kitchen. Co-hosted by Batch’s Tyler Merriman, her extremely close friend (so close you never see them in the same room together), the party runs from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and includes food and drink specials (Maker’s Mark will be there), and contests for Best Dressed and Best Hat, with $1,000 in prizes on the table. Darcy will have a section of the covered patio dedicated to her guests, which can include you. Just tell the hostess you’re there to see Ms. Darcy. Visit Facebook.com/batchftl.

Thoroughbreds: If you take your Derby duds seriously, consider the party at bourbon-friendly restaurant-bar Warren in Delray Beach, the setting for a watch party on Saturday co-hosted by Woodford Reserve, the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby. Taking place from 5 to 7 p.m., the gathering will include Mint Julep or Brown Derby cocktails, the Derby Dapper costume contest and the race broadcast on a large outdoor TV screen. Visit Facebook.com/warrendelray.

The Heat is on: There are plenty of places to watch the tussle between the what-are-the-odds Miami Heat and the New York Knicks at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, but here’s a vote for Bokamper’s on the Intracoastal in Fort Lauderdale. When you read about the plan to demolish Bokamper’s for construction of a hotel that would include a new iteration of the sports bar, you probably said, “Oh, they’ll just screw it up.” Maybe that was me. Anyway, they probably will. Visit Bokampers.com.

Day drinking: Riverwalk Rhythm & Brews, presented by Funky Buddha, returns to downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Esplanade Park from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday with pop-punk jams from Live From 05, lawn games, food trucks and casual hanging out. Visit GoRiverwalk.com.

SUNDAY

Surf scene: Cool happening up at the Rosewater Rooftop at The Ray hotel in downtown Delray Beach with a fashion show by Boynton Beach’s iconic Nomad Surf Shop, set for 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. A benefit for the ocean-sustainability efforts of the Surfrider Foundation and hosted by Nomad’s Taylor Heavyside, the evening will include a DJ and a raffle for a custom surfboard and more. Tickets are $20 and include a raffle ticket and one of The Ray’s specialty drinks for the event. Visit Facebook.com/nomad.shop.

Universal music: The Hollywood ArtsPark Experience concert series returns to the lovely downtown amphitheater at 7 p.m. Sunday with Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, the funky festival favorites (also known for Denson’s stint as saxophonist for The Rolling Stones). The concert, produced by the Rhythm Foundation for the City of Hollywood, will include an opening set by charismatic Miami bluesman and storyteller Uncle Scotchy (less famously known as Eric Garcia). Admission is free. Note this date was supposed to be a show by Larkin Poe, who were forced to cancel due to a scheduling conflict. Visit RhythmFoundation.com.

A new room: A new live-music and event space in Pompano Beach called the Soundpost Venue will have its grand opening at 3 p.m. Sunday. Festivities will include music (Ukrainian violinist Kostia, South Florida blues rockers the Joel DaSilva Band, and Fort Lauderdale singer-pianist Joanna Holstein), art installations (Sara Schesser Bartra and Sharon Lee Swift), a fashion show, silent auction and refreshments. Admission is free. The Soundpost Venue is at 2703 Gateway Drive, a couple of blocks west of Powerline and north of McNab. Visit Facebook.com/soundpostvenue.

Farm to you: Chef Daniel Ramos from Red Splendor Farm in west Lake Worth will host the next installment in his Farm to Table Dinner series at 6 p.m. Sunday at Palm Beach Meats in West Palm Beach. Beginning with a farm-inspired mocktail, the five-course dinner will feature all locally sourced products. A wine list will be available from Pedro’s Fine Wines. For information, tickets ($150) and a look at the menu, visit Facebook.com/redsplendorfarm.
