COVID-19: Six more deaths, 484 new cases reported

ZANESVILLE — The Muskingum County Joint Unified Command has reported the death of six county residents with COVID-19 in the last week.

Two, an 86-year-old and an 82-year-old, died with COVID-19 pneumonia. The others, ages 72, 70, 51 and 72, died with the disease, bringing the death totalof county residents to 196.

The command reported 484 new cases this week. This is up from 311 cases last week, when officials were concerned that people were not getting tested due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

The cases are the highest reported in a week since 553 were reported the week of Oct. 9 and brings the total number of cases to 17,006.

There are 670 active cases, and 25 Muskingum County residents currently hospitalized. Genesis Hospital reported a total of 45 hospitalizations among residents of the six counties it serves. Eleven of those patients are on ventilators.

More than 41,700 county residents have started the vaccination process.

Genesis HealthCare System is offering Moderna COVID-19 booster shots at select Northside Pharmacies by scheduled appointment only for all adults ages 18 and over. To qualify for the booster, you must have completed the second dose of either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine at least six months ago or the single dose of Johnson & Johnson at least two months ago. The ZMCHD has issued guidance for event organizers:

  • Require workers and attendees to wear a mask.

  • Require workers and attendees to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

  • Document attendance and contact information of all workers and attendees.

  • Provide physical guides to maintain social distancing during the event.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces (tables) before and after the event.

  • Provide hand sanitizer on each table.

  • Provide signage for masks and social distancing.

Event organizers are asked to email help@zmchd.org with the word event in the subject line for guidance. Everyone in Muskingum County should wear a mask in public, indoor settings, the department added.
