Bowlers win 2 golds at Asian championships, boccia athletes clinch world youth title, 478 student-athletes earn scholarships

SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (10 to 16 July):

Two golds for Singapore at Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling C'ships

Singapore bowlers won two golds, one silver and four bronze medals at the Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships, which was held in Bangkok from 4 to 12 July.

Ning Tay, 19, won the girls' Masters title on Wednesday (12 July), the first time a Singaporean bowler has won the title since Adelene Wee in 1985. After advancing into the step-ladder finals as the top qualifier, she defeated Malaysia's Anis Hannani Romzi 485-452 (238-209, 247-243) to clinch the gold.

Anis had earlier defeated Singapore's Colleen Pee 201-191 in the opening step-ladder match to advance. Colleen, 19, settled for the bronze medal.

Earlier on Monday, Ning and Colleen teamed up with Arianne Tay and Alyssa Koh to help the Singapore girls' team clinch the team title. They scored a combined 4,876 pinfalls to beat South Korea (4,729) and Malaysia (4,524).

Duo win title at inaugural World Boccia Youth C'ships

Singaporean boccia athletes Aloysius Gan and Yan Jia Yi captured the BC3 Pairs title at the inaugural World Boccia Youth Championships, which were held in Povoa de Varzim, Portugal, from 8 to 14 July.

The duo defeated teams from Brazil, Portugal and Canada, and while they lost to France, they still finished top of the round-robin group to clinch the title.

Gan was also crowned champion in the BC3 individuals (male) category, while Yan earned a bronze medal in the BC3 individuals (female) competition.

The event featured over 50 youth para-athletes from 12 nations.

478 student-athletes earn SOF-Peter Lim Scholarships

This Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarships were awarded to 478 student-athletes in 37 sports during a ceremony at Temasek Polytechnic on Monday (10 July).

This year, it disbursed its highest annual award of $1,254,000 to the student-athletes, including a record-high of 99 recipients in the high-performance under-18 category.

Among the recipients is silat athlete Nur Ashikin Zulkifli from ITE College Central, who continued to train for her sport at her void deck during the COVID-19 pandemic and earned the gold medal at the recent 2023 SEA Games. Other recipients include short-track speed skater Ryo Ong and national water polo player Cayden Loh.

The sports scholarship was inaugurated in 2010 when entrepreneur Peter Lim donated $10 million to the SOF. He pledged an additional $10 million in 2019 to continue the scholarship until 2030. A total of 4,519 scholarships amounting $10.45 million have been awarded.

Mediacorp, Singtel, StarHub to air FIFA Women's World Cup

All 64 matches at the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup will be shown live at no extra charge for existing customers of Mediacorp's mewatch, Singtel TV and StarHub TV.

The tournament will be held from 20 July to 23 August in Australia and New Zealand, and will feature an expanded 32 teams, up from 24 in the previous edition. Among the teams are defending champions, the United States, as well as Asian representatives including South Korea, Japan, Philippines, and Vietnam.

Viewers can stream the games live or on-demand on any device, and can access pre-event content featuring valuable insights, team profiles, and player interviews, building anticipation for the tournament. Replays of matches and daily match highlights will also be provided.

All matches will be made available on StarHub’s TV+ and IPTV platforms (Ch251 and Ch252), Singtel TV, Singtel TV GO (CH141 and Ch142) and CAST, and Mediacorp’s digital video streaming service mewatch. Audiences in Singapore will also be able to catch the opening match live, as well as a delayed telecast of the final match, on free-to-air television on Mediacorp’s Ch5.

Fresh EPL subscription bundles for new season

The 2023/24 English Premier League season will begin on 12 August, and StarHub's Premier+ customers will be able to catch all 380 matches live via dedicated channels Hub Premier 1 to 11 (Ch221 to Ch231) as well as in 4K on Ch232, without any additional cost.

There are two fresh Premier+ subscription bundles to welcome the new season: Premier+ with one-year free broadband ($25.22 per month) and Premier+ and Sports+ with one-year free broadband ($42.99 per month, with Netflix and Disney+).

There is also the UltraSpeed Entertainment bundle ($219.90 per month), where customers will be able to enjoy broadband speed on StarHub's 10Gbps fibre network, with up to 10 times the speed of traditional 1Gbps broadband; and all-in-one access to a wide range of sports programmes.

Apart from live matches, Premier+ subscribers will also continue to enjoy exciting features, such as on-demand full match replays, long and short highlights, live statistics and interactive timelines.

Lion City Sailors make third mid-season signing in Rui Pires

Singapore Premier League (SPL) club Lion City Sailors unveiled Portuguese midfielder Rui Pires as their third signing in the past week, as they seek to strengthen the squad for the upcoming AFC Champions League campaign.

Pires signed a two-year contract and joins the Sailors’ two mid-season signings in defender Bailey Wright and forward Richairo Zivkovic. The 25-year-old played as a defensive midfielder for FC Paços de Ferreira in the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football.

Pires also played in France for second-tier side Troyes for two seasons, helping his club win the 2020/21 Ligue 2 title.

FAS signs MOU with Johor Football Association

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Johor Football Association (JFA) on Tuesday (11 July), with the aim at fostering closer ties and cooperation in the realm of football development for both associations.

The three-year agreement will see both parties collaborate on several key objectives including, an annual football competition involving Singapore and Johor Selection teams; a platform for exchange of youth players as well as the arrangement of regular youth matches; and additional areas of collaboration for football development.

The MOU also recognises the potential for commercial cooperation, including franchising activities, licensing arrangements, merchandising, and other commercial ventures that align with the overall objectives of the agreement and the involved parties.

Lionesses to play Pakistan in friendly at Jalan Besar

The Singapore women’s national football team will host Pakistan in an international ‘A’ friendly match at Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm on Tuesday (18 July).

The 131st-ranked Lionesses are set to take on the visitors, standing 26 places below them in the FIFA rankings, in their first-ever meeting. This will also be head coach Karim Bencherifa's first international match at Jalan Besar Stadium, since taking over the reins in February.

There will be a live broadcast of the match on FAS’ official YouTube page. Tickets for the match ($10 for adults, $6 for concession) are available on the FAS website, the Sistic website as well as onsite at the North Gate on match day.
