SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (10 to 16 October):

AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup trophy tour in Singapore

The AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup trophy tour made its second stop in Singapore, as former Singapore internationals Lionel Lewis and Baihakki Khaizan interacted with fans who took photos with the trophy at Kallang Wave Mall on Saturday (15 October).

Earlier in the day, the duo also took part in a football clinic at Jalan Besar Stadium, organised by the Mitsubishi Electric Cup organisers in partnership with the Football Association of Singapore.

"We couldn't do this tour in the last tournament because of the pandemic," said Malcolm Thorpe, managing director of Sportfive, the marketing agency for the Mitsubishi Electric Cup. "It's good to see people getting used to going back to sports events again, and this tour will help get them excited about the tournament again."

The trophy tour's next stop will be in Kuala Lumpur this coming Saturday, before going on to Jakarta on 26 November and Ho Chi Minh City on 3 December.

Geylang strengthen bid to finish fourth in SPL

Geylang International strengthened their bid to finish in the top half of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) with a 4-2 win over Balestier Khalsa at Toa Payoh Stadium on Friday (14 October).

The Eagles scored through Sime Zuzul (21st), Ilhan Noor (45th) and Tajeli Salamat (49th, 91st), while Balestier replied with goals from Ryoya Taniguchi (40th) and Daniel Goh (93rd).

With one round of games to go, Geylang are in fourth spot in the eight-team league with a one-point lead over fifth-placed Tanjong Pagar United, who lost 1-3 to the Lion City Sailors at Jurong East Stadium on Friday.

The Sailors snapped their four-match losing run with goals from Diego Lopes (17th) and Gabriel Quak (74th, 89th), while Tanjong Pagar replied through Shodai Nishikawa (72nd).

On Saturday, Tampines Rovers registered a 5-3 win over Albirex Niigata (Singapore), which had already sealed the SPL title last week. The Stags scored through Boris Kopitovic (10th, 68th), Taufik Suparno (45th), Yasir Hanapi (67th) and Kyoga Nakamura (89th), while Albirex replied through Ilhan Fandi (1st), Kodai Tanaka (54th) and a Ryaan Sanizal own goal (85th).

At the Jalan Besar Stadium, Hougang beat the Young Lions 5-3 with goals from Fabian Kwok (2nd), Pedro Bortoluzo (32nd, 60th, 79th) and Amy Recha (90th). Glenn Kweh (16th), Danish Qayyum (72nd) and Jordan Emaviwe (89th) scored for the bottom-placed Young Lions.

Stephen Ng to step down as women's national football team head coach

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced on Friday (14 October) that women's national team head coach Stephen Ng will step down by mutual agreement, with effect from 31 October.

Ng was appointed on 7 March 2021 after spending six years at the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam. He led the Lionesses through the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers, the AFF Women’s Championship and the 2021 SEA Games, before leading the team out for the last time against Indonesia at Jalan Besar Stadium on Monday.

“It has been a great 18 months in, what I feel and the public has witnessed, was a progressive tenure from the way the team has developed over time," he said. "These players have the potential to go even further, and I wish the new coach all the very best to continue to raise the level of women football in Singapore.”

Former international Ratna Suffian, who served as Ng’s assistant, will lead the Lionesses as their interim coach. The Lionesses will play their next competitive fixtures during the Olympic Qualifiers in April 2023.

Great Eastern Women's Run hosts clinic with Daughters of Tomorrow

The Great Eastern Women's Run (GEWR) hosted a run clinic and sharing session for more than 50 ladies and their families from Daughters Of Tomorrow at the Singapore Sports Hub on Saturday (15 October).

Elite runners Jenny Huang, Jasmine Goh and Choo Ling Er were present to share their stories, gave tips on fitness and conducted drills with participants

Through GEWR, Great Eastern continues to give back to the community this year through two adopted charities – Daughters Of Tomorrow and Singapore Cancer Society. The public can support these causes in a fund-raising initiative led by Great Eastern staff, financial representatives and the elite runners.

Registration for GEWR is open until 31 October. Runners can choose to join the 10km, 5 km or 2km "Mummy+Me" categories this year. There will also be a competitive 21.1km race, open only to invited local elite athletes.

Singapore Junior Masters to return in November

The Singapore Junior Masters golf tournament will returning for the third consecutive year at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club's Masters Course from 28 to 30 November.

Leading the charge of the top juniors from 13 nations is 15-year-old Ratchanon Chantananuwat, who is currently ranked 11th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. He became the youngest player to ever win on a major tour when he won the Trust Golf Asian Mixed Series.

Returning to the Masters Course are homegrown talents Brandon Han, who had just won the Bangchak Championship, part of the newly formed GENZ Golf Tour, and two-time defending champion Shannon Tan, who is currently on an NCAA scholarship at Texas Tech University.

After successfully running two editions amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will receive a boost with the introduction of new title sponsor, Trust Golf.

Tickets on sale for Singapore Sail Grand Prix

Tickets are on sale for the inaugural Singapore Sail Grand Prix on 14 and 15 January 2023 at Parkland Green at East Coast Park.

The event will be the eighth leg of an 11-stop global competition, as nine international teams do battle just metres from the shoreline, sailing on F50 catamarans at high speeds.

STTA fund-raising golf and dinner event raises over $399,000

The Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) organised a fund-raising golf tournament which concluded on Friday (14 October) at Orchid Country Club.

Following the tournament, there was also a fund-raising dinner, which was graced by Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth. In total, the events raised over $399,000.

The donations will go towards the One Team Singapore Fund for the following initiatives: STTA’s pathway development for Team Singapore athletes, and its high performance sports system.

StarHub to show ICC Men's T20 World Cup matches

StarHub's Sports+ customers will be able to enjoy all 45 cricket matches of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia from Sunday (16 October) to 13 November. The matches will be shown live on Hub Sports 4 (Ch204).

The local telco company will also be airing the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup from 10 to 26 February 2023, as well as the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifiers from 18 June to 9 July next year, on Hub Sports 4.
