SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (22 to 28 August):
Yip Pin Xiu sets 4 short-course world records in Sydney
Five-time Paralympic gold medallist Yip Pin Xiu won three golds and broke four world records in four days of competition at the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney.
The 30-year-old broke the women's 200m freestyle (S2) short-course world record twice in eight hours on Wednesday (24 August). She smashed the previous mark of 6min 28.58sec, set in Spain's Sara Carracelas in 2007 with a swim of 5:00.99 during the morning heats, before improving her record to 4:57.81 to win the gold in the evening final.
On Thursday, she set the women's 100m back (S2) world mark with a time of 2:20.57 in winning her second gold. A day later, she broke Carracela's 100m free (S2) world record of 3:08.60 with a 2:26.51 effort during the morning heats, but withdrew from the evening final.
On Saturday, she set her fourth short-course world record with a 1:06.87 swim en route to gold in the 50m back (S2) final, eclipsing Italian Angela Procida's previous mark of 1:12.30.
Wong Zhi Wei added a silver medal in the men's 50m breaststroke (SB13) event, clocking 33.30sec. Another Singaporean para-swimmer, Danielle Moi, won a bronze medal in the women's 50m butterfly (S14) in 32.99sec.
Ko Pin-yi, Chezka Centeno the inaugural Asian 9-Ball Open champs
Taiwanese pool player Ko Pin-yi won the inaugural men's title at the Asian 9-Ball Open, which was held at the Aspire Recreation Centre at HarbourFront Centre this past week.
The 2015 world champion defeated Filipino James Aranas 13-11 on Sunday (28 August) to pick up the winner's cheque of $10,000.
In the women's competition, the Philippines' Chezka Centeno beat South Korea's Seo Seoa 11-7 to become the first female champion of the event and pocket $5,000.
Singapore's former world No.1 Aloysius Yapp lost 3-9 to the Philippines' Johann Chua in the second round to enter the losers' bracket for another chance to advance. He managed to beat Vietnam's Lim Leng and Do The Kien as well as compatriot William Ang to make to the knockout stage, before losing 9-11 to Ko.
Sailors notch another big win with 9-4 rout of Hougang
The Lion City Sailors continued their rampant scoring form in the Singapore Premier League (SPL), notching a 9-4 rout of Hougang United at the Hougang Stadium on Friday (26 August) to maintain their three-point lead atop the table with six matches left to play. The combined 13 goals in the match were the most-ever in league history.
Goals from Pedro Henrique (11th minute), Diego Lopes (13th), Faris Ramli (28th, 68th), Kim Shin-wook (33rd, 44th, 66th), Maxime Lestienne (51st) and Song Ui-young (81st) sealed the defending champions' third straight high-scoring win, after beating Young Lions 10-1 and Tanjong Pagar 7-0 in their last two matches. Hougang replied through Shawal Anuar (9th), Amy Recha (54th, 57th) and Pedro Bortoluzo (94th).
Second-placed Albirex Niigata (Singapore) kept pace with a 2-1 win over Tanjong Pagar at Jurong East Stadium on Saturday. Kumpei Kakuta (56th) and Ilhan Fandi (73rd) scored for the White Swans, while Tanjong Pagar replied through Blake Ricciuto (86th).
Geylang International moved up to fourth spot with a 3-0 win over Young Lions, with Joshua Perreira (32nd) and Sime Zuzul (46th, 61st) on the scoresheet at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday. On Sunday, two goals from SPL leading scorer Boris Kopitovic (45th, 90th penalty) at Our Tampines Hub gave third-placed Tampines Rovers a 2-1 win over Balestier Khalsa, who replied through Shuhei Hoshino (48th).
Tour de France champion Vingegaard in Singapore Criterium
Reigning Tour de France yellow jersey winner Jonas Vingegaard has confirmed his participation in the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium, which will be held at The Float@Marina Bay on 29 and 30 October.
The 25-year-old Dane is the latest cyclist to confirm his participation of the event alongside Britain's Mark Cavendish, who holds the joint record for the most Tour de France stage wins (34).
Singapore will be represented in the professional criterium race, with Team SCF (Singapore Cycling Federation) led by national cyclist Yeo Boon Kiak, bronze medallist at this year's SEA Games criterium event.
Two amateur races will be organised in partnership with the Singapore Cycling Federation (SCF) – the Men’s Open and Men’s Masters criterium.
Meanwhile, the public can also sign up for the Brompton World Championship, which will have a total capacity of 450 participants across three competitive categories, as well as a Community Ride with a capacity of 400 participants. Tickets will be available on a ballot basis.
Sponsor Prudential has also launched Challenge Your Pulse on the Pulse by Prudential app, with rewards up for grabs. Users can check in at various pit stops around Singapore using their Pulse app to earn points, which can be redeemed for prizes and vouchers.
Michael Carrick is guest-of-honour at JSSL youth tournament
Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will be attending the JSSL Singapore Professional Academy 7s youth football tournament as the guest-of-honour. The tournament will be held from 2 to 4 September in three locations: Our Tampines Hub, The Arena (Woodleigh) and Turf City - The Cage.
Carrick, 41, will also be the keynote speaker at the JSSL 7s Coaching Convention on 1 September, when he will share snippets of his footballing journey and highlights.
The convention brings together the most innovative minds from top clubs around the world, sharing their knowledge and expertise with fellow coaches and participants. Speakers will share stories and tips about planning youth development programmes to help young players achieve their full potential.
Elite development scholarship between Sailors and SJI Int'l
The SJI International-Lion City Sailors elite development scholarship was announced at St Joseph’s Institution International’s 15th anniversary dinner on Friday (26 August).
The programme will see students receive football and academic education in SJI International and the Lion City Sailors football academy, nurturing the future of Singapore football while ensuring that scholars develop academically in a conducive and supportive environment.
It is a full scholarship that covers all associated school costs incurred either leading up to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. Aimed at providing Singapore’s top footballing talents with the opportunity to pursue both academic and sporting excellence, will see its first batch of scholars enrol in January 2023.
The programme includes the added flexibility for selected scholars to take up early national service enlistment after completing the IGCSE under the Lion City Sailors Early Enlistment Bond.
Singtel Charity Golf event raises $1.15 million
Singtel Charity Golf, the telco's annual flagship fundraising event, was held at Tanah Merah Country Club on Friday (26 August), as more than 140 golfers teed off and helped raised $1.15 million to help children and youth with special needs.
The raised funds, which is a 65-per-cent increase compared to the $700,000 raised last year, will be channelled towards its corporate philanthropy programme, Singtel Touching Lives Fund, to support primary, secondary and post-secondary level programmes at its six adopted special education schools.
As part of the programme's 20th anniversary, Singtel also organised the Expressions Through Art exhibition at National Gallery Singapore from 17 to 28 August. This is Singapore’s first exhibition to showcase the artworks of special education students in Singapore.
Run for Inclusion to be held at Turf Club on 3 December
Run for Inclusion will return for its eighth edition as an in-person event on 3 December at Singapore Turf Club. It provides a platform for persons with special needs (PWSNs) to engage in physical activity and hopes to foster a more inclusive society.
The event will feature cycle, run and walk categories where participants can choose varying distances according to their preference and ability. The categories include: personalised distance (below 3km), 3km/5km run/walk, 10km run and 20km cycling.
Participants are also encouraged to attend an integration workshop to learn more about guiding PWSNs to participate in mainstream sports activities. Once completed, participants can choose to partner with a PWSN on the race event day.

FAS to resume Island Wide League and Women's National League
The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) will resume two more amateur football leagues – the FAS Island Wide League (IWL) and the Women’s National League (WNL) - following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
The IWL, which serves as a qualification tournament for the second division of the Singapore Football League, will see 20 clubs compete from September to November.
Teams have been split into five groups of four for the round-robin group stage, before the group winners and top three second-placed teams proceed to the knock-out stage.
The WNL, which is returning for its fourth season, will see 11 teams battle from September to November. Clubs have been split into three groups, with the top three teams and the best second-placed team qualifying for the semi-finals.
IWL teams - Group A: Bukit Timah, Verde Cresta Combined, Woodlands United, GDT Circuit. Group B: Marsiling Causeway Bay, Winchester Isla, Singapore Xin Hua, GFA Victoria. Group C: Prison SRC, Pasirian Lions, East Coast United, Yishun. Group D: Bedok South Avenue, Woodlands Warriors, Woodlands Rangers, Tanah Merah United. Group E: Kaki Bukit, Geylang Serai, Gymkhana, Simei United.
WNL teams - Group A: Winchester Isla, Royal Arion Women's, Ayer Rajah Gryphons, JSSL. Group B: Mattar Sailors, Police Sports Association, Singapore Khalsa Association, Westwood El'Junior. Group C: Singapore Cricket Club, Bussorah Youths, Singapore FC.
