SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (25 to 31 December):

Full schedule of tournaments for young golfers

Young golfers in Singapore will get more opportunities to start their journey with a full schedule of junior golf tournaments by the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) set to tee off in February 2024.

Following the success of the national junior inter-club league, over 30 tournaments for juniors across various stages of development will be held across various golf courses and clubs in Singapore in 2024. These include Sentosa Golf Club, Warren Golf and Country Club, Seletar Country Club, Keppel Golf Club, Tanah Merah Country Club, Singapore Island Country Club, Mandai Executive Golf Course, Sembawang Country Club and Orchid Country Club.

With the expansion of the age groups from five to 14 years old, more junior golfers can develop their tournament skills while enjoying a quality competitive atmosphere at affordable rates at the SGA-BFG Junior Golf Series 2024.

They will also get the opportunity to vie for the SGA Junior Development Order of Merit, a performance-based points system that acts as the main selection tool for SGA future and junior squads, as well as for international junior tournaments.

The top five juniors in the Boys' and Girls' A, B and C divisions Junior Order of Merit will also be invited to take part in the season-ending grand final at the Sentosa Golf Club on 10 December 2024.

Ex-Lions raise nearly $90,000 for NKF patients in charity match

Former Singapore national footballers such as Fandi Ahmad, Malek Awab and Baihakki Khaizan took part in the "Football for Hope - Battle of the Legends" event at Jalan Besar Stadium on Christmas Day (25 December) and helped to raise nearly $90,000 for National Kidney Foundation (NKF) patients.

The event was organised by NKF and former Singapore footballers Samsudin Rahmat, with guest-of-honour, Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development Faishal Ibrahim, watching on with over 800 supporters as the Singapore All-Stars faced the Stable Boys United team which featured singer Hady Mirza. Stable Boys won the match 6-4.

The charity match was also held in honour of former Singapore stalwart Rahmat Mawar on the occasion of his 82nd birthday, as well as to spread the message of healthy living.

Former referee S.K. Kennedy dies at the age of 59

Former Singapore and FIFA football referee S.K. Kennedy died on Tuesday (26 December) at the age of 59. The cause of his death was not made public.

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said in a post of its Facebook page that the former secondary school teacher officiated in the S-League and represented Singapore in international tournaments from the mid-1990s until the end of 2005.

When Kennedy won the S-League's Best Referee award in 2002, he donated his $5,000 prize money as well as the entirety of his refereeing allowance for the season to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, earning applause from the football fraternity.

"While he adopted a no-nonsense approach on the field, Kennedy had a softer demeanour off the pitch and was passionate about caring for the needy in the community," FAS said in its Facebook post.
