SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (3 to 9 July):

4 to represent Singapore at World Para Athletics C'ships

Four Singapore athletes will represent Singapore at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris from 8 to 17 July.

The athletes who have qualified for this elite event are 2023 ASEAN Para Games medallists James Ethan Ang (men's 400m T13) and Muhammad Diroy Noordin (men's shot put F40), as well as Suhairi Suhani (men's long jump T20) and Maisarah Mohamed (women's 100m T36).

The World Para Athletics Championships will be a key event towards qualifying for the 2024 Paris Paralympics, with para-athletes finishing within the top four in their events earning the nod.

Lion City Sailors sign Australian defender Bailey Wright

The Lion City Sailors announced on Sunday (9 July) the signing of Australian centre-back Bailey Wright on a two-year contract, with an option for an additional year’s extension.

The 30-year-old joins the Sailors after a 3.5-year spell at English club Sunderland, after helping the club earn promotion into the Sky Bet Championship in 2022. He made 107 appearances for the Black Cats, regularly captaining the side.

Wright was also a part of Australia’s 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar that saw the Socceroos qualify from a group that featured France, Denmark and Tunisia, before falling to eventual champions Argentina in the round of 16.

Goodstock SpeedFest to be rescheduled to later date

The inaugural Goodstock SpeedFest US Legend Cars racing series, which was originally scheduled to be held from 11 to 13 August at Changi Exhibition Centre, has been rescheduled to a later date.

Organisers said in a media statement on Wednesday (5 July), "After careful consideration and due to circumstances beyond our control, we have decided to reschedule the Goodstock SpeedFest to a later date. The new date will be announced once confirmed."

All existing ticket holders will be issued a refund via the same payment method used for the purchase.

The Sundown Festival, a music extravaganza which was to be held concurrently with Goodstock SpeedFest on 12 and 13 August, will now be moved to Pasir Panjang Power Station on the same dates. Ticket holders are advised that all previously purchased tickets remain valid for the new venue.

Mandai Wildlife Run returns in September after 3-year hiatus

The Mandai Wildlife Run will be held on 23 and 24 September, as part of Singapore Zoo’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Previously known as the Safari Zoo Run, the event is back after a three-year hiatus, and will also feature a line-up of health and wellness activities for all ages.

The run features new race categories, such as a leisure walk for seniors and a corporate challenge. Running aficionados can take part in the 5km Competitive Challenge, while the 5km Fun Run, 5km Silvers Leisure Walk and 3.5km Ranger Buddies Family Dash promises fun for everyone.

Across the race venue, which spans Singapore Zoo, River Wonders and Night Safari, participants can soak in the sights and sounds of nature and wildlife. They are also encouraged to bring their own water bottles, which can be refilled at water points throughout the parks to reduce waste.

In the lead-up to the run, participants can get race-ready with health and wellness classes within the Mandai Wildlife Reserve precinct. After the run event, they can also head for outdoor spin classes at Singapore Zoo’s Pavilion by the Lake.

Registration is open from now until 4 September, with early-bird rates available until 14 July.
