SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (3 to 9 October):

Tampines Rovers seal third spot in SPL

Tampines Rovers sealed their third-place finish in the 2022 Singapore Premier League on Saturday (8 October), after beating Hougang United 4-1 at the Hougang Stadium. Two goals each from Taufik Suparno (14th, 18th minutes) and Boris Kopitovic (42nd, 78th) sealed the Stags' fourth win in five games, with Hougang replying through Andre Moritz (40th).

Tampines now have an unassailable seven-point lead over fourth-placed Tanjong Pagar United with two matches to go. Tanjong Pagar drew 3-3 with Geylang International at Our Tampines Hub on Sunday, with goals from Blake Ricciuto (64th), Khairul Nizam (72nd) and Reo Nishiguchi (89th) and Geylang replying through Vincent Bezecourt (31st, 93rd) and Shakir Hamzah (41st, own goal).

In another SPL match on Saturday, bottom-placed Young Lions came back from 1-4 down to draw 4-4 with Balestier Khalsa at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

A stoppage-time penalty by Jordan Emaviwe ensured that honours are shared, with Khairul Nadim Rahim (23rd), Shah Shahiran (58th) and Elijah Lim (73rd) also scoring for the hosts. Balestier scored through Daniel Goh (4th), Shuhei Hoshino (6th), Ryoya Taniguchi (15th) and Kuraba Kondo (41st).

SportSG explains disciplinary actions against swimmers

Sport Singapore (SportSG) said in a media statement on Friday (7 October) that it had taken into account the benchmarks of international sporting bodies when meting out disciplinary actions against swimmers Joseph Schooling, Amanda Lim and Teong Tzen Wei, all of whom admitted to consuming illicit drugs.

The national sports governing body said that it took into account the fact that the World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) does not impose any sanctions for the ingestion or use of some controlled drugs - including cannabis - if the act took place outside of competition periods.

"SportSG's decision considered that the athletes' urine tests returned negative, and the athletes had on their own admitted to consuming cannabis outside of competition in the past," it added.
