WEEKLY ROUND-UP: Sports happenings in Singapore (4-10 July)

SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (4 to 10 July):

Hee, Nur'Aini are Commonwealth Games flag bearers

Shuttler Terry Hee and para power lifter Nur'Aini Mohamad Yasli were unveiled on Thursday (7 July) as the flag bearers for the Team Singapore contingent at the Commonwealth Games, which will be held from 28 July to 8 August in Birmingham, England.

Singapore will be represented by 67 athletes in nine sports at the Games. At the last edition in Gold Coast in 2018, the city-state won nine medals including five gold medals.

The contingent will be led by former national gymnast Lim Heem Wei in her first outing as chef de mission. The 33-year-old had took part in the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games, and had been the assistant chef de mission in 2018.

Cherie Tan's top female bowler at Brunswick Euro Challenge

Singapore national bowlers continue to achieve success in Europe, with Cherie Tan finishing as the top female bowler at the Brunswick Euro Challenge in Unterfohring, Germany on Sunday (3 July).

Tan, who won the Professional Women's Bowling Association BowlTV Classic last month, was fifth overall in the mixed gender tournament with a total of 1,488 pinfalls. Compatriots New Hui Fen (1,436) and Charmaine Chang (1,402) finished the second- and third-best female bowlers respectively.

Another Singapore bowler, Bernice Lim, had won the European Bowling Tour Masters at the same location the previous week. Meanwhile, the national youth bowlers have also clinched four golds and one bronze at the International Bowling Federation Under-21 World Championships in Helsingborg, Sweden.

James Leow wins at Arnold Palmer Cup

Singapore's top male amateur golfer James Leow helped his Team International side beat Team USA 33-27 to clinch the Arnold Palmer Cup at Golf Club de Geneve in Vandoeuvres, Switzerland on 3 July.

Leow, 25, also won the Michael Carter Award, which is given out to a player from each team who best represents the qualities and ideals that personify Carter, a former Penn State University golfer who died in a car accident in 2002.

The Arnold Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style tournament that pits the top men's and women's university and college golfers from the United States against their international counterparts.

Albirex slump to defeat by Tanjong Pagar

Albirex Niigata (Singapore) suffered a setback in their Singapore Premier League (SPL) title hunt as they crashed 1-2 to Tanjong Pagar United at Jurong East Stadium on Friday (8 July). Two stoppage-time goals by the Jaguars - courtesy of Reo Nishiguchi (91st minute) and Kharul Nizam (93rd minute) stunned the Swans, who had led via an Ilhan Fandi goal in the eighth minute.

SPL leaders Lion City Sailors also failed to win over the weekend, drawing 1-1 with Hougang United at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday. Sailors stalwart Song Ui-young equalised in the 71st minute after Kristijan Krajcek scored for Hougang in the 66th minute, allowing the defending champions to pull seven points clear atop the table, having played a game more than Albirex.

In other SPL matches, Geylang International continued their recent resurgence with a 2-0 win over Young Lions on Friday, thanks to goals from Sime Zuzul (72nd) and Tajeli Salamat (90th). On Saturday, Balestier Khalsa and Tampines Rovers battled to a 2-2 draw at Toa Payoh Stadium, with goals from Balestier's Ignatius Ang (7th) and Shuhei Hoshino (39th), and Tampines' Boris Kopitovic (52nd) and Taufik Suparno (63rd).

Albirex women's team sign former Japan international

Albirex Niigata (Singapore) have signed former Japan international Kana Kitahara to play in the inaugural Deloitte Women's Premier League (WPL).

The 33-year-old defender - part of the Japan national team that came in second at the 2015 Women's World Cup - joins from Mynavi Sendai Ladies, who came in fifth in Japan's Women Empowerment League, the highest division of women's football in the country.

Albirex are struggling in sixth place in the seven-team WPL, collecting just one point from three games. They have also conceded seven goals, the worst after bottom side Hougang United's 18.

SCF launches 'Cycle For Hope' campaign

The Singapore Cycling Federation (SCF) has on Saturday (9 July) launched the Cycle For Hope campaign to raise funds for the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) and SCF’s Children Academy.

For this campaign, 70 per cent of all funds raised through donations would be channelled to the SCS, while 30 per crnt would go towards developing SCF’s Children Academy and developmental programmes, including the construction of a much-awaited new BMX track.

The campaign commenced with a Cycling Challenge Event (100km, 300km or 500km to be completed indoors and/or outdoors) over a six-week period between 9 July and 20 August, to create cancer awareness and to raise funds for both its beneficiaries. The challenge event will culminate in a Cycling Road Criterium and a Kids’ Race to be held at the Singapore Sports Hub on 21 August.

Singapore GP launches community campaign

Race promoter Singapore GP has launched the "Back on Track" community campaign with free activities throughout the heartlands to get residents geared up for the Formula One Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix.

• Pit Lane Experience (29 September): Back for the eighth year, the event will see up to 4,000 fans getting up close to the F1 team garages and cars at the F1 Pit Building. Local residents can ballot for a free pair of tickets from 15 August.

• SingaporeGP Roving Truck (8 July to 29 September): The #SingaporeGP Roving Truck will make pit stops at over 30 locations all over the island, offering free live screenings of F1 races in Austria, France, Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. Those who attend the screenings will also be able to double their balloting chances of getting tickets for the Pit Lane Experience. Visitors to the truck can also experience the Simulator Challenge, in which competitor will race for a chance to win tickets to the Singapore Grand Prix.

• Race On Festival@West Coast (27 August): As part of the National Day Street Party, visitors to the West Coast Community Centre can have a go at the simulators on the #SingaporeGP Roving Truck and get an up-close view of a McLaren 720S and the rare McLaren Elva – one of only 149 units worldwide. Also featured at the festival is the first Mighty AllStars phygital collectible showcase in Singapore of all the drivers from the 2022 F1 season.

• Project F1 HeARTland (27 August to 2 October): Local artists 8EyedSpud and HAFI, as well as children from non-profit inclusive arts group Superhero Me, will create two special artworks embodying the spirit of F1.

• Online Activities: Complementing the physical activities are various free F1-themed crafts, puzzles, and activity sheets that will keep youngsters occupied.

StarHub to air pre-season friendlies of Premier League clubs

StarHub's Premier+ subscribers will be able to enjoy free viewing of the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy pre-season match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace on the new Hub Premier 2 channel on Friday (15 July).

They can also catch pre-season friendlies of other English Premier League sides such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa. Here is the full list of friendlies:

UA Combine competition in Singapore

Under Armour has announced its inaugural UA Combine competition to establish the ultimate benchmark in athlete performance. The competition will take place across four countries, including Singapore at the Pasir Panjang Power Station on 20 August, and Malaysia at IM4U Sentral Puchong on 3 September.

Participants will compete in eight physical and mental tests, which challenge the athlete’s agility, stamina, vertical, power, endurance, strength, speed, and cognition. Points will be earned for each completed test and athletes will be ranked according to their final results.

Cash prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 will be awarded to the top three athletes in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Registration will be open to 300 competitors (150 males and 150 females) per event. All athletes taking part in UA Combine will also receive a head-to-toe Under Armour competitor kit.
