Flag bearers named for SEA Games and APG, all defending champs to return for Singapore Badminton Open

SINGAPORE — Here is a round-up of sports events and developments in Singapore in the past week (10 to 16 April):

Terry Tay, Toh Tze Ning named flag bearers at SEA Games, APG

Gymnast Terry Tay and boccia athlete Toh Sze Ning have been named as the flag bearer for the Team Singapore contingents for the 2023 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games (APG) respectively.

The duo received the state flags during the Flag Presentation Ceremony at Our Tampines Hub on Saturday (15 April), with wushu athlete Vera Tan unveiled as the pledge taker.

Guests-of-honour Tan Chuan-Jin, Singapore National Olympic Council president and Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, presented the Singapore flags to the chefs de mission - Dr Hing Siong Chen for the SEA Games and Erynne Lim for the APG. The duo then handed them over to the flag bearers.

Singapore has confirmed a total of 558 athletes across 30 sports for the SEA Games from 5 to 17 May, as well as 26 para-athletes across six sports for the APG from 3 to 9 June. Both Games will be held in Cambodia for the first time.

The Royal Torch Relay Ceremony for the SEA Games and APG was held before the ceremony at Tampines Central Park. Athletes joined Hor Sarun, Special Envoy of the Cambodia SEA Games Organising Committee, and Sok Khoeun, Ambassador of Cambodia to Singapore, to carry the torch into Our Tampines Hub.

Provisional national women's football squad named for SEA Games

Singapore women’s football national head coach Karim Bencherifa named a provisional squad of 27 players for the Lionesses’ upcoming SEA Games in Cambodia. A final squad of 20 players will be named ahead of the team’s departure for the Games on 30 April.

Overseas-based players Putri Syaliza, Danelle Tan and Nicole Lim have been added to the squad, along with 10 Lionesses who could be making their SEA Games debuts.

As part of their preparations, the Lionesses went on a three-day training camp in Kuala Lumpur in the past week. The team have also been undergoing training sessions six days a week, coupled with friendly matches against local clubs.

The Lionesses will face Thailand (3 May), Cambodia (6 May) and Laos (9 May) in Group B of the women's football competition at the SEA Games

Team Nila volunteers take part in Forward S'pore Conversation

Over 60 Team Nila volunteers shared their perspectives on how volunteers can be empowered, enriched and engaged at a Forward Singapore Conversation organised by Sport Singapore at Resorts World Sentosa on Friday (14 April).

The session centred on the following three areas: strengthening social compact, co-creating the future of sport volunteerism, and deepening the sense of identity.

Participants shared stories on their personal growth through sport volunteering, and also discussed how they are advocates of volunteer work, and are able to spark a chain reaction that encourages many others to get involved.

They eventually joined over 2,500 volunteers for an evening of fun at the Universal Studios Singapore Waterworld as part of Team Nila’s eighth anniversary.

All defending champions to return for S'pore Badminton Open

All defending champions of the KFF Singapore Badminton Open presented by JK Technology are set to return for the 6 to 11 June tournament at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. This comes after the confirmation of player line-ups from Indonesia and India on Thursday (13 April).

Leading the Indonesian player contingent is the defending men’s singles champion Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, the current world No.2 who finished second at the 2022 BWF World Tour Finals. Joining him are reigning women’s doubles champions Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, alongside the men’s doubles champions Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthinand.

India's defending women's singles champion Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has also confirmed her return to Singapore, along with her men's singles compatriots Lakshya Sen, the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, and Srikanth Kidambi, the former world No.1.

Earlier, men’s singles world No.1 Viktor Axelsen and defending mixed doubles champion Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand have already confirmed their participation at the Open, which will be a BWF World Tour Super 750 series event with a US$850,000 prize purse.

Tickets are available via Ticketmaster, with season ticket pricing ranging from $120 to $380.

Singapore International Triathlon returns after 3-year hiatus

More than 1,000 participants across 35 countries took part in the Singapore International Triathlon on Sunday (16 April), as the flagship event for Triathlon Singapore makes a comeback after a three-year hiatus for its 12th edition.

The event featured six race categories, with national athletes Luke Chua and Herlene Yu winning the men's and women's National Super Sprint Championships titles respectively.

Indonesia's Jauhari Johan, the 2019 SEA Games men's triathlon gold medallist, took the top spot for his age group again, as he gears up for the upcoming 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.

Absolute fitness studio opens Star Vista branch

Boutique fitness studio Absolute has opened its doors at The Star Vista, offering classes for both rhythm cycling and pilates reformer.

Clients can look forward to classes designed to provide a holistic experience, with state-of-the-art facilities such as an immersive cycling room with full lights and surround sound system, and floor-to-ceiling windows for its pilates room.

The studio is fitted with 20 Merrithew SPX Max Reformer for pilates reformer classes, and 35 Stages SC2 bikes for rhythm cycling classes.

From now until 15 May, the public can enjoy a special opening flash sale: $150 for the rhythm cycling 10-class pack and $220 for the pilates reformer 10-class pack.
