The Trojans improved to 5-2 in district play. Noah Alvarez led the Trojans with 20 points, AC Munoz had 19 points, Jalen Green scored 17 and Lawrence Flores scored 10 points.

Las Cruces 62, Deming 36

The Bulldawgs improved to 15-6 on the season and 6-1 in district play.

Jaci Powers scored 26 points to lead Las Cruces, Lila Ashida scored 13 points and Mercedes Willis scored 10 points.

Mayfield 43, Gadsden 15

Mayfield improved to 5-2 in district play and will play Tuesday at Alamogordo.

Maggie Salas scored 13 points to lead the Trojans and Felicia Pugh scored 12.

Las Cruces 97, Mayfield 70

The Las Cruces boys reached the 20-0 mark with a dominant win at home to improve to 6-0 in District 3-5A.

The Trojans dropped to 4-2 in district play entering the second half of district play.

"District basketball is very important," Bulldawgs coach William Benjamin said. "District basketball prepares you for the state tournament. Regardless of what people say, we have good teams in our district. You are talking about a Mayfield-Cruces rivalry. You have to take that serious."

The Bulldawgs led 51-28 at halftime.

Bulldawgs guard David Cruz caught fire in the third quarter, hitting five 3-pointers in the third quarter. Cruz scored all 18 of his points in the third quarter. Deuce Benjamin led the Bulldawgs with 35 points and Isaiah Carr scored 27 points.

Cameron Sowards led the Trojans with 23 points, Jalen Greene scored 10 points and AC Munoz scored 10 points.

"(Mayfield coach Keith Roberts) should be commended," Benjamin said. "Mayfield hasn't been in this position as far as being in contention for a district championship since probably 2014. We are talking about Tommy Morrow. It just happened he caught us on a good night. We are playing at home. My guy David was making 3s out of his mind and we came out on top."

Girls

Las Cruces 42, Mayfield 36

Las Cruces enters the second half of district play in first place at 5-1 after beating the Trojans on the road.

Emma Christiano led the Bullawgs with 14 points, Jaci Powers scored 11 points and Lila Ashida scored nine points.

The Bulldawgs play at Deming on Friday.

The Trojans fell to 4-2 in district play and play host to Gadsden on Friday.

Maggie Salas led the Trojans with 11 points and Felicia Pugh scored nine points.

Centennial 46, Gadsden 36

Joslyn Montez led Centennial with 15 points and Paetin Silva scored 10 points.

Wrestling

Las Cruces boys win Bowie Invite

The Las Cruces boys wrestling team won the 43rd El Paso Bowie Invitational over the weekend.

The Bulldawgs were part of a strong contingent of southern New Mexico teams with Deming placing second, Gadsden fourth and Centennial 12th of 24 teams.

Las Cruces High's Aden Martinez placed first at 113 pounds, Avery Atma placed first at 126 pounds, Centennial's Tye Barker won at 138 pounds and Gadsden's Tomas Herrera was first at 170 pounds.

The Las Cruces girls placed fifth in the team standings with Alyssa Sedillo placing first at 95 pounds, Las Cruces High's Joie Hernandez placing third at 102 pounds, Chaparral's Karla Garcia placing second at 110 pounds, Centennial's Victoria Moore placing second at 119 pounds and Centennial's Annabel Garcia placing second at 215 pounds.
