Weeks-long search for missing peacock ends in NE Ohio

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio (WJW) – A three-week search for an evasive peacock in Willoughby has come to an end.

The bird had been on a “wanted list” by local police since early February. That’s when officials said four peacocks first escaped when their owner accidentally left a pen door unlocked.

Two all-white peacocks were recovered soon after in neighbors’ yards. A blue peacock was hit and killed on Route 2 about a half mile from its home. But, the fourth and final bird remained on the run.

Finally, on Monday evening, the very recognizable escapee was spotted on Parkway Drive in Eastlake. That’s about two miles from where the pretty pheasant first escaped.

Officials tell FOX 8, the peacock was spotted at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The owner was called and the bird was corralled before 7 p.m.

The unusual search has kept residents in the area talking.

The animals are not native to Ohio but are legal to be kept as pets in the Buckeye State and adapt well — even the cold of Ohio winters. They are omnivores, meaning in the wild they will eat almost anything.
