Wegmans location in Massachusetts to close up shop later this summer
Wegmans announced that it will be closing one of its Massachusetts locations later this summer.
The store at 1245 Worcester Street in Natick will be shut down this summer, with an exact date to be determined, according to the grocery chain’s website.
The 365 employees at the Natick store were notified throughout the day on Thursday and are all being offered positions at other area Wegmans, according to a spokesperson for the grocery chain.
“Making these decisions is never easy. However, we do it for the long-term benefit of our people, our customers, and our communities,” said Brien MacKendrick, human resources director, of Wegmans New England division. “Unfortunately, with this non-traditional location, we are unable to attract enough customers for our business model to work.”
The Natick store opened in 2018 and was Wegmans’ first multi-level store within a major mall. At 134,000 square feet, it is one of the company’s largest locations.
“We love our Natick community and customers, and we’re eager to pursue new store locations in the area for the future,” said MacKendrick. “In the meantime, we hope to continue to serve our Natick customers through our e-commerce offerings and our other area stores.”
Wegmans has five additional stores in the Greater Boston area and does not have plans to close any other stores.
