Weigel Family Christmas brings cheer to hundreds of kids

Weigel Family Christmas, a charitable effort that has provided holiday presents for an astounding 4,600 kids since its inception in 1998, is helping more East Tennessee children than ever this year: 250.

The charity's 25-year celebration this weekend brought together hundreds of volunteers who shop with kids at Target to help them select toys and clothes with a budget of $200 for each child. The students are treated to breakfast, lunch and a few surprises.

“This December is especially heartwarming to now be able to reflect on many years of our volunteers impacting the lives of these kids, as well as the kids making an impact on our volunteers,” said Bill Weigel, the Weigels chairman.

“We love watching the kids shop and seeing their faces light up. This day is special, filled with smiles galore and tears of joy, and it truly makes our holiday season as much as we help make theirs.”

Knoxville-based Weigel's, which operates 72 convenience stores, a dairy and a bakery, works with the Salvation Army and vendors to make the event possible.

Weigel's also is a generous partner of the News Sentinel Charities Empty Stocking Fund. Each year, the company hosts easy and fun ways to give through its Milk Fund supporting the News Sentinel Charities Empty Stocking Fund!

Simply make stop at the designated Weigel's store on the right day to buy that's day's special drink – the proceeds provide meals for our neighbors in need!

Coffee Day, Dec. 7Buy a coffee at 1150 Hunter's Crossing Drive in Alcoa, and your purchase goes a long way!

Cappuccino Day, Dec. 14Treat yourself to a cappuccino at 2865 Winfield Dunn Parkway in Sevierville, and the proceeds go to help others.

Eggnog Day, Dec. 21 Pick up some bottles of the famous Weigels Eggnog at 7505 Clinton Highway in Powell to share the Christmas spirit.

Our News Sentinel Charities Empty Stocking Fund is once again ready to distribute holiday meal boxes this season, and we're collecting donations now to fund our 100% volunteer-run effort. Every single dollar goes to the charity's efforts to feed families.

Thanks to your generosity, we've been helping our neighbors in need since 1912, and we're thrilled to do it again.
