The hug of a cozy weighted blanket feels like a dream until you start to overheat. Night (or nap) sweats aren't fun, and weighted blankets are so thick that they can often lead to them. There is a solution for this slight inconvenience, though: Try swapping the blanket you own for a cooling option. Cooling weighted blankets offer up the same calming vibes regular weighted blankets do, but are made with materials that keep your body temp at a comfy level for you.

If you've never tried a weighted blanket, here's why they're awesome. Filled with a heavy load of tiny plastic or glass pellets, weighted blankets create a confined feeling similar to a hug. "These blankets were originally designed as therapeutic tools for people [with] autism, anxiety, PTSD, or sensory disorders. However, weighted blankets have become much more commonplace over the last five years," says Becca Fair, a certified sleep science coach and sleep accessories editor at Mattress Nerd.

And cooling weighted blankets rock because they're specifically designed for hot sleepers, says Shelby Harris, PsyD, director of sleep health at Sleepopolis. "They use cooling technologies and breathable materials to help increase airflow and regulate body temperature, keeping you cool and comfortable," she adds. These materials include cotton or linen, or even phase change material that can absorb heat and regulate body temperature.

In theory, the weight "is helpful for people with anxiety or who want to feel cozy and embraced at nighttime," says Carleara Weiss, PhD, a research assistant professor at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, adult-geriatric nurse, and member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Sleep Research Society. However, when it comes down to it, there isn't any concrete scientific evidence that it works better than any other relaxing bedtime routine.

Still, the placebo effect is real, since anxiety has a very strong placebo response, Martin Antony, PhD, a professor of psychology at Ryerson University and the co-author of The Anti-Anxiety Workbook, previously told Women's Health. "If you believe the weighted blanket will soothe you to sleep, then it might do just that."

So, if you're a sweaty sleeper who still wants that "gentle hug" as you drift off to sleep, shop this list now. Here are the nine best cooling weighted blankets, tested by thousands of reviewers.

Weighted Blanket

If you think the word "organic" only refers to produce, think again. This queen-sized weighted blanket is made from—yep—organic cotton that's naturally cool to the touch.

The sustainable materials don't stop there, though. Luna's cooling weighted blanket also uses glass beads (peace out, plastic) to create that highly-coveted calming sensation. Color and sizing options are pretty vast, too.

"The Lune Weighted Blanket uses 100 percent natural cotton, which is a great material for those who tend to get hot or sweat while using a traditional weighted blanket," says Harris. "Cotton is a naturally breathable material helping to keep you cool and dry." It's also hypoallergenic!

Rave Review: "I absolutely love this blanket. I suffer from a disorder that causes my joints to dislocate very easily with movement (even in my sleep) and this blanket has helped so much with that. Since using this blanket, I feel more rested when I wake up and I don't hurt as badly as I used to."

Premium Weighted Blanket

What does it take to rack up nearly five stars on Amazon? This weighted blanket from Quility made it happen. Per adoring fans, the cover is "very well made," "exactly as described and marketed," "very effective," "feels fantastic"—the list goes on.

Overall, the consensus is that this cooling weighted blanket practically promises improved sleep without breaking a sweat. It's designed with micro beads that are evenly distributed to maintain comfortable temperature control.

It's made of 100 percent cotton and has a whole seven (!) layers of softness for the best sleep. Plus, it comes in seven colors, from navy, to pink, and a wide range of weights, from five to 30 pounds.

Rave Review: "I bought this weighted blanket after hearing about how effective it can be to enhance good sleep. It has taken me several weeks to get used to it, but I am glad that I persevered. I do sleep better with it, but the additional weight can sometimes feel too much. It certainly does promote more restful sleep and I consider it to be effective for the purpose for which it was designed."

Tree Napper

Definitely one of the, if not the, most aesthetically-pleasing picks on the list, Bearaby's weighted blanket keeps you feeling and looking cool while you count sheep. The chunky-knit number is made of plant-based tree fabric that's not only renewable (Mother Earth thanks you), but is also totally breathable.

"The loose knit design of this weighted blanket increases air flow and uses a cool to the touch tencel fabric," says Harris. "It's also a great environmentally friendly option."

Another plus? It's so soft you won't be able to keep your hands off of it. Aaand it comes in eight gorgeous neutral colors that'll defs match your duvet.

Rave Review: "I love my cotton napper. I bought it because I usually sleep very lightly and often wake up through the night and can't fall back asleep. I've heard that weighted blankets could help, but I live in Florida where it gets hot at night. This was the perfect weighted blanket for me, and since I've been using it, I've been sleeping through the night."

The last things I'll mention: It comes in four weight options, from 15 to 25 pounds, plus, it's easy to clean and quick drying. I love to see it!

Weighted Throw Blanket

Quilted with tiny glass beads that are evenly distributed in the textured cotton fabric, Brooklinen's weighted blanket has a serious fan following. Made with soft textured cotton, the 12-pound blanket is designed to be totally breathable and cozy.

Brooklinen is already a high-quality, reputable brand, but if you need more convincing, know that this blanket has a 4.5-star average rating, too. And since it's a lighter weight, it's more portable than some other ones on this list.

"This is another great cooling weighted blanket option that uses cotton to promote airflow," Harris says. It's safe for most washers and dryers, but can also be spot-cleaned if you prefer that.

Rave Review: "I like the feel of a weighted blanket when reading or relaxing, so I bought one of these on a whim. I use it at the foot of my bed and will bring it up if I'm chilly or just want to feel the weight when I'm relaxing. My family kept stealing it from me, so I purchased a second one. I really like the green color and I ordered the blue which is pretty. The weight is evenly distributed, too."

Cozy up under this blanket whenever you're in need of a hug, and when it's not in use, use it to adorn your bed or an accent chair. Due to their bulkiness, weighted blankets can sometimes be an eye sore, but this one doesn't fall into that category.

Meet the experts

Women's Health

What should I look for in a weighted blanket?

Let's be honest. Weighted blankets aren't always budget-friendly, so you want to make sure you like what you buy. Here are some key qualities that are worth looking into before you make an investment.

Weight

This is an important one. To put it simply, it's best to choose a blanket that is 10 percent of your body weight. For example, if you weight 150 pounds, you'd need a 15-pound blanket. If you weigh 200 pounds, you'd opt for a 20-pound blanket. Ideally, you want the right amount of pressure without putting too much weight on your body.

Material/Fill

The material and fill come down to your comfort and what feels best for you. Preferably, you want to lean towards fillings that are breathable yet durable. "Some lower quality weighted blankets will have plastic pellets as their fill. I typically recommend either blankets with micro glass beads or organic materials like hemp hulls," says Fair. "These are likely to last longer and [are] easier to clean."

Care

When it comes to care, every blanket will be different. Ultimately, you want to make sure that the cleaning requirements are convenient for you. "Some are spot clean only, others require dry cleaning, or some can be cleaned at home in a standard washing machine," says Fair. "Depending on the fill, you may even be able to dry it on a low setting, or go the more tedious route and hang dry." Pick what works for you.

Do weighted blankets make you hot?

Just like every other blanket out there, there's always the chance you might warm up. However, most of the fills won't retain your body heat. "If you want to eliminate the possibility in its entirety, go for a chunky knit weighted blanket," says Fair. "You get the weight and the breathability from the weave."

gfx
Women's Health - Hearst Owned

How heavy should my weighted blanket be?

It's essential to get a blanket that's right for your body type. "The general recommendation is to find a blanket that weighs about 10 percent of your body weight. So if you weigh 200 pounds, look for a 20-pound weighted blanket," explains Fair. This will ensure you don't experience any discomfort as you sleep.

Who shouldn’t use a weighted blanket?

Unfortunately, weighted blankets aren't for everyone. People with asthma, sleep apnea, or claustrophobia are among those Fair believes should avoid using unweighted blankets. For these people, weighted blankets may disrupt breathing or trigger an unwanted response with its weight. They can also be hazardous to children, as they can pose a risk of suffocation.
