Weightlifters punch tickets to regionals at District 16-2A Championship

Archbishop McCarthy swept the competition at the District 16-2A Girls Weightlifting Championship held at Jensen Beach High School on Friday, winning both the traditional bench press combined with the clean-and-jerk lift and also in the snatch, a new event for the 2021-22 season.

It was a strong day for area schools as South Fork took third as a team with the host Falcons right behind in fourth in the traditional lifts.

For the Bulldogs, Bliss Weiler put up 120 pounds on the bench and 140 for the clean-and-jerk to win the title at 119 pounds and Karis Bergen at 182 pounds put up 135 pounds on the bench and 140 for the clean-and-jerk to also earn a district title. Erin Craig won the title in the snatch event at 119 pounds, putting up 100 pounds for South Fork.

Carolina O'Hara brought home the title at 101 pounds for Jensen Beach, putting up 100 pounds on the bench press and 120 for the clean-and-jerk.

Okeechobee's Mariah Jenkens was the overall winner in the snatch in the unlimited division putting up 105 pounds after finishing second in the traditional format.

The top six lifters in all weight classes will advance to the Region 4-2A Championship to be held at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda on Jan. 27.

Jensen Beach wrestling marches on at 1A state duals

Jensen Beach picked up wins in five of the seven lowest weight classes to scores a 36-27 victory over Mater Lakes to advance to the state semifinals of the FHSAA 1A State Duals Championships at Osceola High School in Kissimmee on Friday.

Sebastian Degennaro and Malachi Harriel each scored vital wins via victory to score six points each at 106 and 182 pounds respectively and Dylan Fox at 152 pounds scored a win via technical fall to earn five points for the Falcons.

Ryan Mooney (120 pounds), reigning 1A state champion Jonny Dobbs (126 pounds), Ryan Duguay (132 pounds), Jewell Williams (138 pounds), Duke Byfield (160 pounds) and Matt O’Hara (195 pounds) all brought home victories to help Jensen Beach earn a state semifinal berth against Palm Bay at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Fort Pierce Central came out on the losing end in the 3A state quarterfinals, falling 37-25 to Wellington.

For the Cobras, Jacob Fleitas (145 pounds), JT Apicella (160 pounds), Riley Orr (170 pounds), Hernan Ortiz (220 pounds) and defending state champion Gabriel Jacas (285 pounds) scored victories on the day.

Boys Basketball

Centennial 56, Treasure Coast 53: Ty Owens scored 22 points and Fresh Walters scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half as the Eagles (17-3) held off a late Titan rally to win their eighth straight game.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as Treasure Coast held an 11-8 first quarter lead and the two teams were tied at 24 going to the second half.

Centennial got some separation toward the end of the third quarter as Owens completed a three-point play the hard way and knocked down a 3-pointer on consecutive trips as the Eagles took a 42-32 lead to the fourth quarter.

Maintaining its margin comfortable for most of the quarter, Centennial had to sweat out the final minute after Treasure Coast's Bek Fleurissant completed a three-point play with 50 seconds remaining to cut the Eagle lead to 50-48.

Two free throws from Jaydon Washington stretched the lead back to four, and Owens hit 4-for-4 in the final 30 seconds from the charity stripe to seal the win for Centennial.

Brandon Williams scored 15 points and Antonio Roesemann added 12 points for Treasure Coast.

Girls Soccer

Pine School 8, Jupiter Christian 1: Hannah Squier scored six goals as the Knights (10-2-2) rolled in a critical District 8-2A match. Phillipa Hilton-Green added a goal and an assist, Kiele Mader hit the scoresheet, Ava Pearl and Keziah Anderson picked up one assist each and Justina Southern made six saves in goal for Pine School.

Girls Basketball

St. Edward’s 41, All Saints Academy 24: Alexa Soderman scored 14 points, Raina Duggal added 11 points and Taylor Wolfe chipped in nine points to lead the Pirates (12-4) in the victory.
