Welcome to the '50s: New burger joint at LSUA goes retro

Put on your bobby socks and saddle shoes and head over to the new burger joint at LSU of Alexandria.

Stepping inside Burger 318, 191 Jerry Myrick Drive, is like stepping into a 1950s diner.

“It’s a very welcoming ‘Happy Days’ kind of vibe,” said Kirsten Miller, director of auxilary services, who oversees Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services on campus. Michael Chapoy is the on-campus manager for Chartwells.

She doesn’t recall how they came up with the idea, but the red, white and checkered décor “just screamed like the perfect ‘50s retro theme.”

Though the diner is located on campus, it will also cater to the community at-large.

“We have so many people that come out to the games and support LSUA,” Miller said.

The diner is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for lunch and 5-8 p.m. for dinner.

For now, the menu is limited to burgers, fries, chicken strips and salads, Miller said. If you're looking for a malt, one isn’t offered right now, but the shop hopes to offer the treat in the future.

Some of the athletes were waiting at the door Friday before Burger 318 opened to the public, said Jon Hoover, senior director of operations at Chartwells for Louisiana State University.

LSUA cheerleaders Bethany Bonnette, Kylie Callegari and Sheridan Black visited the school's newest dining option, Burger 318, just to see what it was like. They all loved the retro theme.

“I can’t wait to try it. I feel like the burgers would be great,” said Bonnette, a sophomore English major. “It’s a great atmosphere.”

“I’m excited to try the food. The name is perfect ― Burger 318. I love it,” said Callegari, a sophomore radiology major. “I think it’s going to be very busy all the time.”

Black, a freshman education major, said she loves the views from the windows of the golf course. In addition, she said the diner gives her and other students another option besides the campus cafeteria.

Keelin Foley, marketing and communications assistant for the athletic department, was eating a burger and fries in a booth overlooking the golf course. He had no complaints about the food and said the customer service was good.
