Welcome children's issues reporter Christine Stephenson to The Herald-Times

On her second day as children issues reporter for The Herald-Times, Christine Stephenson covered the Monroe County Community School Corp. board meeting, something that will be part of her news coverage for The Herald-Times.

Stephenson is familiar with Bloomington, having graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in journalism in 2020. For three of her four years at IU, she was on the staff of the Indiana Daily Student. It was while she was at the IDS that she first realized how impactful articles in newspapers could be, she said.

She had worked on the school magazine at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, where she graduated in 2016. But she didn't realize then how her stories could affect people's lives.

While still a student at IU, Stephenson worked as an intern at the Times-Mail in Bedford. That's where she met her fiancé, Murphy Wheeler, who was a sports writer at the time.

After graduating, Stephenson moved to Jasper to work at the Dubois County Herald. She was one of two people in the newsroom and covered government and education. Some of her favorite stories dealt with students.

"Kids are fun to talk to," she said. "They don't have a filter."

Now living in Bloomington, Stephenson is happy to be back. Besides learning more about the area's schools and meeting teachers and students, she also hopes to get a dog sometime soon.
