Heading into the third and final day of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Patriots draft has followed a few consistent themes.

High-end athletic defenders and interior offensive linemen:

Here’s how the draft board shook out for New England:

Round 1, Pick 17: CB Christian Gonzalez, Oregon

After trading down three slots to #17, the Patriots ended up with their likely preferred option at #14 anyway.

The 6′1″ Oregon product is immediately the largest cornerback New England has on their roster. Hernandez’s rare combination of length and athleticism should allow New England to better match up with the elite receivers of the AFC East like Tyreek Hills and Stefon Diggs.

Pegged by many draft pundits to go in the draft’s Top 10, Gonzalez has an immediate chance to become one of the Patriots starting outside corners.

Round 2, Pick 46: EDGE Keion White, Georgia Tech

This tight end-turned-edge rusher has all the qualities Bill Belichick values on the defensive line. With impressive size and outstanding athleticism, White can play inside or outside the tackles.

White will join a group that already boasts premier rushing talents in Josh Uche and Mathew Judon. New England will be able to shuffle their deck of playing cards along the d-line to keep opposing offenses on their toes.

Round 3, Pick 76: LB/ S Hybrid Marte Mapu, Sacramento State

The first draftee that doesn’t appear to have an immediate avenue to heavy contribution in 2023, Marte Mapu still brings versatility New England covets.

Matu excelled while playing a hybrid linebacker/safety role at Sacramento State. With explosive, aggressive play Mapu’s keen football instincts frequently made an impact defender at the FCS level.

Although Matu will start his NFL career staring up at Kyle Dugger, Adrian Phillips and Jabrill Peppers on the depth chart, fans should expect to see him laying down the law in the defensive backfield soon.

Round 4, Pick 107: C Jake Andrews, Troy

As captain David Andrews crosses the threshold into the wrong side of 30, it’s possible New England has found his heir apparent.

Although he has no relation to his new teammates, Jake Andrews’ gritty, physical brand of football will remind fans of David.

Andrews also played guard in college, giving New England options to rotate the 6′3″, 325-pound Alabama native into any of the three interior line positions.

Round 4, Pick 112: K Chad Ryland

A rare trade between the Patriots and the New York Jets, vaulted New England upward eight spots to select Ryland.

With 38-year-old Nick Folk’s leg power on the decline, Ryland’s selection brings to mind the last time New England selected a kicker in the fourth round. During the 2006 Draft, New England tabbed Stephen Gostowski as Adam Vinatieri’s heir, who then went on to spend 14 seasons in Foxboro.

In other words, New England didn’t spend a 4th round pick on a kicker to have him sit.

Round 4, Pick 117: G Sidy Sow, Eastern Michigan

Sow is another player with a supremely high athletic upside.

His 9.72 Relative Atheltic Score is the 41st highest out of 1423 offensive guards assessed since 1987.

Sow split time between left guard and left tackle in 55 career college starts. No matter the position, Sow made his presence felt.

Round 5, Pick 144: G Antonio Mafi, UCLA

For the third time, the Patriots added to their interior offensive line.

The former D-tackle plays physical and is known for his leadership, the 6′3″ Bruin was elected as a team captain in the Shrine Bowl, which New England coaches participated in.

With less than four years of O-line play under his belt, Mafi projects to be more of a long-term project than an immediate stalwart on the o-line.

Round 6, Pick 187: WR Kayshon Boutte, LSU

Round 6, Pick 192: P Bryce Baringer, Michigan State

Round 6, Pick 210: WR Demario Douglas, Liberty

Round 6, Pick 217: CB/ST Ameer Speed, Michigan State

Round 7, Pick 245: DB/KR Isaiah Bolden, Jackson State
