Welcome the newest member of the family to Louisville Zoo: A baby zebra
The Louisville Zoo's newest resident is sure to bring a smile to your face.
A zebra foal was born last week, according to a release from the zoo. The new filly is the daughter of Azizi, a 6-year-old Hartmann's mountain zebra, and she's already "running around and keeping mom busy."
The stripped baby weighs 71 pounds, according to the news release from the zoo, and was born just before midnight Thursday. Her name has not yet been decided but will be determined soon.
We got our first glimpse at the filly through a video posted by the zoo, which shows the baby zebra stretching her legs and galloping alongside an older zebra.
The Louisville Zoo has seen an influx of births in recent months, with more on the way. A harbor seal was born in early May, according to the release, and staffers are currently monitoring Kianga, a Masai giraffe who is expecting a calf soon.
The zoo has a web page that offers a live feed of the facility's new harbor seal, who has not yet been named, as well as other updates about recent and expected births among animals.
“We are ecstatic to have so much to celebrate this spring. These new offspring will be wonderful ambassadors to tell the stories of their species,” Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney said in a statement. “We look forward to watching this new filly grow with our community and sharing news about our pending giraffe birth.”
The new zebra, meanwhile, can be seen in the Louisville Zoo's Africa zone, according to the release.
