A well-known sporting goods retailer is coming to Glen Carbon’s Orchard Town Center

Progress continues at the Orchard Town Center project in Glen Carbon.

Well-known retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods secured a location adjacent to and south of the future Meijer grocery store parking lot, according to a press release issued by the village on Thursday.

Mayor Bob Marcus is “thrilled” that the retailer is coming to Glen Carbon, he stated in the release.

“The families and residents in the Glen/Ed area love team sports; from our little league teams to high school and the SIUE athletic programs, we are an active community,” Marcus said.

“Beyond team sports, with so many recreational spaces, parks and trails to enjoy, it just makes sense to have a high-caliber sporting goods store in the Village.”

The retailer will take up over 6.5 acres of the property and be accessible by bike and pedestrian trails, according to the release.

Details of the construction’s time frame are not available at this time.

Tim Lowe of the Staenberg Group, the development company for the center, said in a phone interview that details about Dick’s Sporting Goods will be discussed at Glen Carbon’s Building and Development Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 27.

An agenda for the meeting shows the committee will review and approve the concept plan for the sporting goods store.

Lowe said that the development is progressing, and the hardest part – Phase 1 involving the roadwork around the center – is complete.

He added that additional off-site infrastructure improvements were in progress.

Multiple lots are still available on the development property, said Lowe, who is optimistic that space will be occupied by more out-of-market retailers in time.

Dick’s Sporting Goods joins Chick-fil-A, Olive Garden, Club Car Wash and Plaza Tire Service as part of the development.

Chick-fil-A opened at 2319 Troy Road earlier this year.

Construction of the Olive Garden restaurant is currently in progress.

Lowe said the Italian restaurant chain, as well as Club Car Wash and Plaza Tire Service, should all open around the end of the year.

Founded in 1948, Dick’s Sporting Goods is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The retailer offers outdoor and athletic equipment and apparel. For more information, visit dickssportinggoods.com.
