Adam Zimmer, an offensive analyst for the Cincinnati Bengals, died on Monday, the Bengals confirmed in a statement. He was 38 years old.

Zimmer followed in the footsteps of his father, former Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, and began his coaching career with the New Orleans Saints in 2006.

"The thoughts and prayers of the New Orleans Saints organization go out to the entire Zimmer family, including Adam's father, Mike, and his two sisters, Corri and Marki, following the passing of Adam Zimmer," the team wrote in a statement. "We had fond memories of Adam from the four years he spent in our organization as an assistant coach from 2006-09, including serving as a member of our Super Bowl Championship coaching staff. Adam was knowledgeable, hard working, well-liked by everyone he came into contact with and enthusiastic."

Zimmer moved on to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010 and joined the Bengals as an assistant defensive backs coach, while his father served as defensive coordinator, in 2013. He followed his father to the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, where he stayed for eight seasons as a linebackers' coach and then as a co-defensive coordinator.

In a statement, the Vikings' ownership group said it is "heartbroken" to hear about Zimmer's passing.

"Adam was a kind, respectful man and over his years in Minnesota, it was evident he cared tremendously about his family, his players, his fellow coaches and the Vikings front office staff," it read. "Our thoughts are with Mike, Corri, Marki and the entire Zimmer family."

Zimmer rejoined the Bengals as an offensive analyst this year.

"Our organization has had the privilege of knowing and working with the Zimmer family for 15 years," Bengals president Mike Brown said. "We have the highest regard for Mike and Adam, and we are incredibly saddened by this tragic news. Mike and Adam were more than just coaches for us – they were friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Zimmer family at this time."

The cause of Zimmer's death was not immediately known at the time of publication.
