Wellington bicyclist dead after being struck by car in Panhandle crash

A bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle Sunday evening in Collingsworth County near Wellington.

According to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, at approximately 8:20 p.m. Sunday, 27-year-old bicyclist Juan Perez-Hernandez of Wellington died at the scene after being struck by a 2013 Nissan Altima driven by a 16-year-old female from Shamrock.

Investigators believe the Nissan Altima was traveling west on FM 3197 approximately one mile east of Wellington and approaching a bicyclist also traveling westbound. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Altima struck the rear of the bicycle, resulting in the rider's death.

The release stated the bicycle had reflectors and lights illuminating from the front and the rear. The driver of the Nissan Altima was unlicensed and released to a family member on the scene. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash.

This crash is being investigated Texas Highway Patrol Troopers. TDPS reports this is a ongoing investigation and no charges have been made at this time.
