Wells Fargo, Wyndham golf tournaments remain in place amid new PGA Tour schedule

Next year’s Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte once again will be among the PGA Tour’s biggest-paying spotlight events.

Tour officials announced Monday that the Wells Fargo tournament, again set for the Quail Hollow Club in south Charlotte, will be among the eight Signature Events on the 2024 schedule.

The four competitive rounds will be played May 9-12, which is Mothers Day weekend.

Signature Events, known this year as “designated tournaments,” will be open to the top 50 finishers in this year’s FedEx Cup standings, plus the top 10 finishers from the PGA’s fall tour schedule, and the top five point-earners from four early-season events in 2024.

PGA officials said the Wells Fargo Championship will have a field of 70 to 80 players, and there will not be a cut after 36 rounds.

Also eligible will be PGA Tour event winners in 2024 and any players ranked among the top 30 in the world.

The lack of a cut is a new wrinkle in the tournament schedule for several tournaments on the FedEx Cup schedule.

Other Signature Events in 2024 will be The Sentry (Jan. 1-7); the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (Jan. 29-Feb. 4); the Genesis Invitational (Feb. 12-18); the Arnold Palmer Invitational (March 4-10); the RBC Heritage (April 15-21); the Memorial Tournament (June 3-9); and the Travelers Championship (June 17-23).

These Signature Events carry bigger purses and offer more FedEx Cup points than other tour events that are not “majors.”

North Carolina’s other regular PGA Tour stop, the Wyndham in Greensboro, also has heightened importance next season. The Wyndham (August 5-11) concludes the FedExCup Regular Season and finalizes the Comcast Business TOUR TOP 10, which will award a doubled prize pool of $40 million, with $8 million going to the winner.

In 2024, the PGA Tour is reverting to its old calendar-based format. Players will begin earning FedEx Cup points at the first event in 2024, The Sentry in Maui, Hawaii. In recent years, points could be earned at several events in the fall, after the tour championship event in Atlanta in late September.

“We are excited about the roll-out of the PGA Tour’s reimagined schedule and what the season will offer to our fans,” tour commissioner Jay Monahan said.

PGA officials said that by offering tournament slots to players who do well in the late-fall and early-season events, they are opening their Signature Events to lesser-known professionals who are on hot streak.

Schedule notes

The Wells Fargo Championship tournament dates fall one week before the PGA Championship in Louisville.

The final regular-season event before the 2024 playoffs will be the Wyndham Championship, set for Aug. 5-11 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.

Another PGA tournament will be played in the Carolinas on the same weekend as the Wells Fargo Championship. The Myrtle Beach Classic will be played May 6-12 at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club and will offer 300 FedEx Cup points to its winner. It is likely to draw many of the players who don’t qualify for the field in Charlotte.

In all, the PGA Tour visits the Carolinas five times in 2024 – the RBC Heritage, in Hilton Head Island, S.C.; the Wells Fargo and Myrtle Beach events; the Wyndham Championship; and the U.S. Open, which will be played next June in Pinehurst.

The PGA Tour will take a break on the week of July 29-Aug. 4, when the Summer Olympics’ men’s golf tournament is played in Paris.

The days of seeing show business and sports celebrities playing with pros in the final round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am are over. Amateurs will play only in the first two rounds next year.
