There were 29 pedestrians hit and killed in Raleigh in 2022. Here’s who they were.

The Raleigh Police Department responded to crashes that killed 27 pedestrians in 2022; the State Highway Patrol handled two others on highways just yards from the city limits.

Here, based on crash reports filed with the state Division of Motor Vehicles and death certificates from the state Department of Health and Human Services, are what we know about each person and how they died:

1. Jan. 12, about 2:30 p.m. Miriam J. Dorsey, 77, was walking in the parking lot outside her apartment building when she was hit by a maintenance truck backing out of a parking space. Police said the driver’s view out his rear window was partially blocked by the load in the truck bed. They cited him with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

2. Jan. 21, about 4:30 p.m. Erin Simanskis, a 63-year-old editor at WRAL-TV, was hit by a van on Western Boulevard after she got into a minor accident during a snow storm and got out of her SUV to speak to the other driver. The man was also hit and seriously injured. The driver of the van took off on foot but was arrested a few days later and charged with felony hit/run death, felony hit/run serious injury and failure to reduce speed. Police suspected he had been drinking, but he was not charged with DWI.

3. Feb. 6, about 10:15 p.m. Christina T. Hernandez, a 25-year-old bartender, had run out of gas on Interstate 540 and was standing on the shoulder next to her SUV with a roadside assistance worker when they were both hit by a Honda Accord going 70 mph. The driver of the Accord drove off but was later arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, two counts of felony hit-and-run, failure to stop and failure to move over.

4. March 5, about 12:45 a.m. Emmanuel E. Jenkins, 36, was crossing Capital Boulevard just north of Cavalry Drive when he was hit by the driver of a Buick who had a green light at the intersection. Police estimated the car was going about 30 mph when it hit Jenkins, who was “walking outside of the crosswalk.” Police determined that Jenkins had failed to yield the right of way to the car and did not cite the driver.

5. March 6, about 8:20 p.m. A 72-year-old man was crossing New Bern Avenue west of Hedingham Boulevard when he was hit and killed by the driver of a Toyota going 55 mph in a 45-mph zone. The driver was cited with DWI. The victim’s name was not available.

6. March 8, about 3 a.m. Jonathan S. Willruth, a 39-year-old landscape worker from Maine, was run over by the rear wheel of a Jeep after jumping on the running board in a hotel parking lot off South Saunders Street. He died more than two weeks later.

7. March 13, about 9:10 p.m. A man walking with a bicycle was hit as he crossed Capital Boulevard just south of Crabtree Boulevard. The driver of the Kia told police that the man had darted in front of him, and the crash report indicates that the driver’s visibility was obstructed, though it doesn’t elaborate. Police did not cite the driver. The victim’s name was not available.

8. March 15, about 6:35 a.m. Chayan Gonzalez Zagada, a 36-year-old construction worker, was apparently trying to cross eastbound I-440 near where it merges with I-40 in Southeast Raleigh when he was hit by a pickup truck going 65 mph. The road is four lanes wide, and state troopers noted that it was before dawn on a stretch of highway without overhead lights.

9. March 15, about 11:55 p.m. Madiba Bazin, 59, was crossing Six Forks Road at Lynn Road when he was hit in the crosswalk. Bazin did not have a “Walk” signal and apparently tried to outrun the Toyota, which had a green light. The Toyota’s driver was going an estimated 11 mph over the 45 mph speed limit but was not cited, according to the crash report.

10. April 16, about 9:30 p.m. Jacob E. Butler, a 39-year-old recording engineer in the music industry, was reportedly lying in westbound I-40 near the Lake Wheeler Road overpass when he was hit by a car or truck that did not stop.

11. April 20, about 3:55 a.m. Joshua B. Lint, 34, was crossing westbound I-440 on the bridge over Lake Boone Trail and had nearly made it to the shoulder when he was hit by a pickup truck going an estimated 68 mph. He was lying in the road when he was hit a second time by a car. Police noted the highway was dark without any overhead lights.

12. June 13, about 12:55 a.m. Kelvin S. Wiggins, 35, was hit by a car going about 50 mph on Capital Boulevard between Calvary Drive and North New Hope Road. The driver of the car told police that Wiggins was seated in the center lane, and police said they suspected he was impaired by drugs or alcohol.

13. June 14, about 10:15 p.m. Wayne S. Cassidy Jr., 34, was walking east on or near the side white line of Chapel Hill Road when he was hit from behind by a car going 45 mph. Cassidy died more than a month later. The driver was charged with DWI. There are no sidewalks or street lights where Cassidy was hit.

14. Aug. 14, about 2:36 a.m. Diane Marie Bass, 59, was walking on the shoulder of northbound Capital Boulevard near Calvary Drive when she was hit from behind by an SUV going 55 mph. The driver was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. There are no sidewalks or street lights where Bass was hit.

15. Aug. 27, about 4:46 p.m. Albert D. James Jr., a 53-year-old mason from Durham, was hit on eastbound I-40 about a mile east of Chapel Hill Road. Police indicate that there was heavy traffic at the time and that the driver swerved to avoid hitting vehicles that had stopped because of James “darting into the road,” and ended up hitting him.

16. Sept. 9, about 9:10 p.m. Tamara M. McNeil, a 24-year-old food service worker from Florida, was hit by an SUV on northbound Capital Boulevard about 250 feet south of Calvary Drive. The driver told police that McNeil was lying in the right turn lane.

17. Sept. 23, about 12:36 a.m. Ricky McKie Mabry, a 37-year-old laborer from South Carolina who did welding work, was crossing northbound Capital Boulevard between Yonkers Road and I-440 when he was hit by an SUV going 40 mph. Police suspected Mabry was impaired by alcohol.

18. Oct. 12, about 7:05 a.m. Faramarz Zeinahvazi, 76, was hit by the rear left corner of a school bus as it turned from southbound Six Forks Road into the bus lane at Carroll Middle School. Zeinahvazi, who lived nearby, was walking south on a sidewalk on Six Forks and was crossing the entrance to the bus lane when he was hit. The bus driver was apparently unaware she had hit him, and police initially thought he had been struck by an unknown vehicle that had driven off.

19. Oct. 13, about 12:07 a.m. Charles L. Baylor Jr., a 29-year-old cook, was walking on the shoulder of South Saunders Street when he was hit from behind by an SUV going 35 mph. The driver drove off but was later arrested. Police suspected the driver was impaired by alcohol and indicated that he was driving in an “erratic, careless, negligent or aggressive manner.”

20. Oct. 25, about 4:56 p.m. Jose A. Mejia Lopez, a 65-year-old landscaper, was walking off the side of Fox Road near his home when the driver of a pickup ran off the road and hit him at about 50 mph. The truck then swerved across the intersection with Town Drive and hit a tree. The driver was charged with aggravated felony death by vehicle, aggravated felony serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane control and failure to reduce speed. There is no sidewalk where Mejia was walking. The speed limit is 35 mph.

21. Oct. 28, about 8:27 p.m. Yobani Rosario Andelis, a 35-year-old construction worker, was hit by a car going 45 mph as he crossed New Bern Avenue about 140 feet east of New Hope Road. The road was dark and unlit by street lights, according to police.

22. Nov. 4, about 4:42 p.m. Gloria E. Jeney, 91, was crossing Country Club Trail at Stoneface Way on a motorized scooter when she was hit by a car at an estimated 25 mph. Jeney lived nearby. There are sidewalks with ramps leading to the pavement at the intersection but no marked crosswalks. Traffic on Country Club Trail does not have to stop at the intersection.

23. Nov. 11, about 8:05 p.m. Derrick Lanier Branch, a 59-year-old factory worker from Wake Forest, was crossing Capital Boulevard a quarter mile north of Calvary Drive in heavy rain when he was hit by several cars and trucks. Police say the driver of the first vehicle, a Kia K5, stopped, got out to look back at Branch down in the roadway, then drove off. They’re still looking for the driver. Police also say it’s not clear how many cars and trucks hit Branch while he was down.

24. Nov. 15, about 8:39 a.m. Sarah Meilike, 38, who had just begun working at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, was hit by an SUV while walking in a crosswalk on South Wilmington Street at Chapanoke Road south of downtown Raleigh. Police say a “Don’t Walk” sign was flashing as Meilike tried to get across six lanes of northbound South Wilmington. The driver was not cited.

25. Nov. 19, just after 10 a.m. Hailey Brooks, 11, was performing with a dance troupe in the Raleigh Christmas Parade on Hillsborough Street when the driver of a pickup truck towing a float reportedly lost his brakes and drifted into the dancers from behind. Police charged the pickup driver with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade. A grand jury recently indicted him on a charge of involuntary manslaughter, a felony.

26. Nov. 26, about 7:32 p.m. Samantha Briggs, 12, was hit as she and four others were crossing Hillsborough Street near Bashford Road after a trip to a Sheetz convenience store on nearby Chapel Hill Road. Police say the driver swerved into the center turn lane, hit Briggs at 45 mph and kept going. The driver still has not been found. There are no street lights, crosswalks or sidewalks in the area.

27. Nov. 29, about 8:10 p.m. Ronge Mwanakyungu, a 27-year-old rideshare driver, attempted to cross westbound New Bern Avenue about 70 feet west of Hedingham Boulevard when he was hit by a car going 45 mph. There’s no crosswalk at Hedingham and no street lights in the area.

28. Dec. 8, about 5:25 p.m. Evaristo Carranza Soto, a 58-year-old construction worker, was hit while crossing Poole Road near Kennedy Street just after dark. The driver was going an estimated 42 mph in a 35-mph zone. Police suspected Soto, who lived nearby, was impaired by medication, drugs or alcohol and that he walked into the path of the car.

29. Dec. 14, about 8:20 a.m. Otoniel Hernandez, 35, was hit in the far right lane of westbound Glenwood Avenue near Hollyridge Drive. Police says Hernandez “darted into the far right travel lane” in front of the oncoming SUV.
