"Today" show beauty and fashion expert Bobbie Thomas is opening up in her first interview since her husband's death.

Thomas' husband Michael Marion died at age 42 in December after spending five weeks in the ICU fighting a bacterial infection that caused his organs to fail. Marion suffered an ischemic stroke a year earlier, but Thomas said his death was unexpected.

"I don't need to be told there was a silver lining or a bigger reason, there isn't. And that is OK for me to feel," Thomas told "Today" co-host Hoda Kotb in an interview that aired Wednesday. "I have gratitude for being loved."

Thomas shared a photo of her and Kotb on Instagram hugging saying she hopes her story may help others in mourning feel less alone.

The couple married in 2013 at former "Today" host Kathie Lee Gifford's house. Thomas said she remembered being so scared during her wedding day, but remembers Marion being "so happy."

"We were so deeply bound," she said.

At the time of their marriage, Thomas said she knew Marion had a rare disease that affected his immune system but said they were told the disease was manageable, making his death unexpected.

"Deep inside I knew that we may not be holding hands at 80, 90 (years old)," she said.

Together they share 5-year-old son, Miles. Thomas told Kotb that explaining Marion's death to Miles has been "the most painful." She shared that one time at bedtime Miles questioned life after his father's death.

"He asked me 'Who invented it and why?' " Thomas reflected, initially thinking her son was asking her about a truck or a toy. "He said 'I don't understand why we can't all be angels.' He was still trying to figure out how we could all be together."

While she is still grieving the loss of her husband six months later, Thomas said she still has positive feelings about the relationship she shared with her husband.

"Instead of worrying about that I lost him, I think the little time he had he gave to me. I'm really, really lucky," Thomas said.
