'We're just getting started': Boy Scouts honor Terry Saban for community work

Terry Saban, the wife of University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban, was honored Friday for her contributions to the community at the 10th annual Black Warrior Council Boys Scouts of America Circle of Honor awards luncheon.
The ceremony was held Friday afternoon at the Embassy Suites hotel to raise funds for the council's scouting program and present Terry Saban with this year's Circle of Honor award.
The award is presented to people in West Central Alabama whose livelihood and actions reflect the same values of the Black Warrior Boys Scouts. Recipients have also shown advocacy for youth and leadership in the community.
Past recipients of the award include Nick Saban, former U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, scientist and philanthropist Thomas Joiner, pharmacist and retailer James I. Harrison Jr., civic leader Mary Ann Phelps and more.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox also paid tribute to Terry Saban for her leadership and work with Tuscaloosa youth. Video tributes came from Nick Saban, Cathy Joiner and other community leaders.
Terry Saban said she was grateful to be recognized for her work in the community and that it's important to know that she didn't do it alone.
"Nick always says when a team wins, the coach gets too much credit. When a team loses, the coach gets too much credit. So really anything that we have been able to accomplish that I have participated in, one person gets way too much credit, It's a team," said Terry Saban during Friday's event.
"It's exemplified by our Nick's Kids (Foundation) table and all of the people who participate in the wonderful things that we've been able to accomplish and we're just getting started," she said.

Terry Saban was also gifted with a cross made by three young men in the Tuscaloosa County Juvenile Detention Center who learned welding skills in the center's welding program, which is funded by the Sabans.
Terry Saban is the CEO and co-founder of the Nick's Kids Foundation, the official charity of Nick and Terry Saban. The nonprofit foundation focuses on causes that benefit children, families, teachers and students.
The Nick's Kids Foundation has donated nearly $11 million to the community and completed multiple hands-on projects including 19 Habitat for Humanity Homes, the Tuscaloosa All-Inclusive Playground, the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk Playground, the Alberta School of Performing Arts Playground, Career Tech classes at the Tuscaloosa County Juvenile Detention Center and the Saban Center.
In a social media post made Friday, Maddox said "I cannot say enough good things about the impact Ms. Terry has had on our city, and I can't wait to see what’s around the corner with the Saban Center."
The Saban Center will serve as an interactive hub for hands-on education, arts, discovery and recreation, which will occupy the former Tuscaloosa News Building. The center will serve as new headquarters for the Tuscaloosa Children's Theatre and the Children's Hands-On Museum, which will be re-branded as IGNITE.
Terry Saban earned a master's of education degree from Kent Sate University and taught English for 12 years. She and Nick Saban have two adult children, Nicholas Saban and Kristen Saban-Setas.
Also during Friday's ceremony, retired DCH Health System administrator Sammy Watson, who served as the event's emcee, announced that the council had raised $230,815 through the luncheon that day. Proceeds from the lunch will be used to expand Boy Scout programs, making them available to over 3,000 young people in West Central Alabama.
The Boy Scouts of America is the Nation’s leading outdoor education and character development program. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
