HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Alabama kicked off this campaign year with a special election two weeks ago for the Alabama Senate District 9 seat.

State Rep. Wes Kitchens won the Republican primary outright, with 52 percent of the vote, defeating Alabama Rep. Brock Colvin and Stacy George. No Democrats ran for the seat. The Alabama Secretary of State certified the results on Friday.

That victory means Kitchens will be sworn in as the new District 9 Senator on Tuesday. The swearing in is set for 10 a.m. at the Marshall County Courthouse.

It also means another special election will be necessary. The Senate District 9 race was necessary after Clay Scofield resigned his Senate seat to take a job with the Business Council of Alabama.

Once Kitchens’ current House District 27 seat is officially vacated, Gov. Kay Ivey will order a special election to fill that seat.

Two candidates have already announced they will seek the seat. Arab native Stacy George, who finished third in the District 9 race and former Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education Secretary Jeana Ross of Guntersville, both said they are running.

House District 27 includes Arab, Guntersville, Union Grove and Grant.
