West Bladen set to host South Columbus in opener

Aug. 17—DUBLIN — When the Knights take the field under the lights or their football opener on Friday, Coach Stanley Williams wants just one thing.

"We need to come out and play lights out," he said.

West Bladen opens its 2022 schedule Friday by hosting South Columbus in a non-conference tilt, and it's another homecoming of sorts for former head coach Russell Dove, who led the Knights to their last winning record and playoff berth in 2015.

"Russell Dove does a good job of getting his players ready for the moment," Williams said. "They are always well-prepared."

The Stallions will run their offense out of a shotgun wing-T featuring quarterback Jordan Johnson, who will tuck the ball and run often, along with wide receivers/wingbacks Demonta Gore and Aveon Bellamy.

On defense, South Columbus will offer up a four-front set and also a 5-2.

"They are a good team," Williams said. "South Columbus always puts a good product on the field, and we will have our hands full on both sides of the ball."

West Bladen will be at full strength on Friday, but Williams will have his eyes firmly set on senior QB1 Javarrie Adams.

"He's going to have to command the offense," Williams said. "I want to see him take charge."

Overall, Williams said the key to getting a win Friday will be to stop the run and keep the Stallions' offense off the field.

"And, of course, put the ball in the box," he added. "Our f=defense needs to remain stout, but putting points on the board will be important for us."

Kickoff on Friday at West Bladen will be 7:30 p.m.
