West Canada Valley girls advance to meet Westmoreland for basketball tourney championship

NEWPORT – The West Canada Valley girls breezed to a 69-30 win to start their season Saturday and earned a spot in Sunday’s championship game at the own inaugural West Canada Valley Sports Boosters Tip Off Tournament.

West Canada Valley’s Indians (1-0) led by 10 points after one quarter and 20 at halftime against Sherburne-Earlville and will be back in action Sunday against Westmoreland, a 31-20 winner over Brookfield in Saturday’s first varsity game.

Sherburne-Earlville (0-1) scored first, taking its only lead on the first of Trinity Thornton’s three three-pointers before West Canada Valley went on a 9-1 run. The Indians added a 13-0 run bridging the end of the first quarter and start of the second. The Marauders never got closer than 16 points after that.

Analyce Grabowski and Reese Fellows each scored 18 points to lead West Canada Valley; Fellows added 16 rebounds for a double-double – she had eight in 14 games as a sophomore during the abbreviated COVID-19 season in the spring – and Grabowski , a current freshman , added eight steals, five assists and four rebounds to her career-high scoring performance. Olivia Morreale scored 13 points with four steals and four assists, Lydia Reimer had nine points, eight rebounds and three steals, and Hanna Burdick scored the other nine points.

Thornton led Sherburne-Earlville with 11 points.

Westmoreland overcame a slow start that saw the Bulldogs score two points in the first quarter and trail 11-9 at halftime, coming back with 10 points to take the lead in the third quarter. Westmoreland outscored Brookfield 22-9 in the second half.

Gabriella Moore led Westmoreland (1-0) with 10 points and eight rebounds. Madelynne Enos scored nine points.

Sara Brean led Brookfield (0-1) with 13 points.

Brookfield and Sherburne-Earlville play at 11:45 a.m. Sunday following a junior varsity game between West Canada Valley and Richfield Springs. The championship game is scheduled to tip off at 1:30 p.m.
