West Canada Valley girls win first tip-off basketball tournament on their home court

NEWPORT — With a pair of wins on their home court over the weekend, the West Canada Valley Indians opened the 2021-22 girls’ basketball season as champions of the inaugural West Canada Valley Sports Boosters Tip Off Tournament.

The Indians (2-0) followed Saturday’s 69-30 win over Sherburne-Earlville with a 37-16 victory over the Westmoreland Bulldogs in Sunday’s championship game.

Brookfield defeated Sherburne-Earlville 43-22 in the consolation game.

West Canada Valley limited Westmoreland (1-1) to five points or fewer in each of Sunday’s four quarters and opened a double-digit lead before halftime. The Bulldogs got as close as eight points only once in the second half when Ella McGregor opened the scoring in the third quarter.

The Indians had only one field goal through the first seven minutes of the second half but extended its lead to 15 points by shooting 5-for-8 at the foul line. West Canada Valley shot 23 free throws to Westmoreland’s four over the course of the game.

Hanna Burdick led West Canada Valley with nine points in the championship game while Erin Gorinshek, Olivia Morreale and Reese Fellows each scored eight. Fellows, the tournament’s most valuable player, also grabbed 15 rebounds.

Morreale was selected for the tournament’s all-star team with Westmoreland’s Madelynne Enos and Gabriella Moore, Brookfield’s Sara Brean and Sherburne-Earlville’s Alexis James.

Alexandria Albrecht was Westmoreland’s high scorer Sunday with seven points. The Bulldogs scored seven points in the second half on two McGregor baskets in the third quarter and an Albrecht three-pointer in the fourth.

Lily Elliott scored 19 points for Brookfield (1-1) in its consolation game victory while Megan Kupris added 12 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots. Trininty Thornton scored nine points for Sherburne-Earlville (0-2).

West Canada Valley next plays Wednesday at Hamilton.
