West central Minnesota reports 65 new COVID-19 cases, most in Stearns County, in Tuesday's state update; state reports 870 new cases, 7 deaths

Mar. 23—WILLMAR — There were 65 new cases of COVID-19 reported in west central Minnesota in Tuesday's state update.

No new deaths were reported in the area of 11 counties followed by the West Central Tribune. Of the new cases, Stearns County reported 47, and seven area counties reported 18.

Three counties reported no new cases — Big Stone, Chippewa, and Lac qui Parle counties.

Kandiyohi and Redwood counties each reported five new cases. Meeker County had four new cases. Pope, Renville, Swift and Yellow Medicine counties each reported one case.

Statewide there were 870 newly reported cases overall.


That brings the state's cumulative total to 507,231.

Of the cumulative number of cases, 38,789 of them have been among health care workers.

Seven additional deaths were attributed to COVID-19, for a current total of 6,789 deaths. Most of the deaths, 4,248, have occurred in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 5,625 of the people who have died were 70 or older.

The information was included in the latest daily situation update from the Minnesota Department of Health, released at 11 a.m. daily. The data released are current as of 4 p.m. the day before.

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of COVID-19 cases among residents confirmed to reside in area counties and the number of deaths includes:

* Big Stone County: 534 cases; 4 deaths

* Chippewa County: 1,415 cases; 35 deaths


Kandiyohi County: 5,966 cases; 79 deaths

* Lac qui Parle County: 706 cases; 17 deaths

* Meeker County: 2,137 cases; 35 deaths

* Pope County: 880 cases; 6 deaths

* Redwood County: 1,518 cases; 34 deaths

* Renville County: 1,581 cases; 43 deaths

* Stearns County: 19,401 cases; 208 deaths

* Swift County: 914 cases; 18 deaths

* Yellow Medicine County: 1,013 cases; 17 deaths

The state is now also reporting daily vaccine administration numbers. The vaccine is not yet available to the general public. Health care workers and long-term care facility residents are the priority populations currently.

As of Tuesday's report, 1,437,931 people have received one dose and 854,827 have completed the vaccine series statewide.
