The sound of Taps sets a somber tone as members of American Legion Post 593 honored veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The names of local vets are permanently etched in stone on the Bairdford World War ll Veterans Memorial, which was built in 1945.

Arthur Royal Decker, 97. served with many of them and pays tribute to them every Memorial Day.

This service is one of seven services that the American Legion organized in West Deer, East Deer and Indiana Township.

And the American Legion wants to remind the public of the true meaning of this federal holiday.

“It’s not picnics. It’s not fireworks,” said Dennis Martinez of American Legion Post 593. “It’s the remembrance of those who gave all to save this country.”
