West Des Moines man charged with attempted murder following Court Avenue shooting, stabbing

A West Des Moines man was arrested Wednesday in connection to a fight on Court Avenue that left two people in critical condition.

Terrion Javari Maxfield, 25, has been charged with attempted murder, going armed with intent, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and drug charges, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department.

A fight broke out on the sidewalk and street at the intersection of 3rd Street and Court Avenue at around 1:45 a.m. on Sept. 9, according to Des Moines Police Department Spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek. One person was stabbed and another was shot, Parizek said. Both victims were in critical condition following the incident, he said, and were still hospitalized as of Thursday.

Surveillance footage showed Maxfield retrieving a firearm from a vehicle and then approaching and shooting one of the victims multiple times, according to a criminal complaint.

Maxfield then fled the scene in his car, later crashing into a pole near SE 6th St and Indianola Ave, according to the complaint. He fled from the scene on foot, leaving behind a seriously injured female in the car, according to Parizek.

Police recovered a firearm, narcotics and a large amount of cash in the vehicle, which they later connected to Maxfield, according to the release and the criminal complaint.

Maxfield was arrested on Sept. 14 at the 1000 block of 73rd Street in Windsor Heights after attempting to flee from police, the release said. Following his arrest, Maxfield was further charged with interference with official acts, possession with intent to deliver cocaine and failure to affix a drug tax stamp.

At the time of the incident and his arrest, Maxfield had an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Webster County for a parole violation, court records show.
