West End workshops return, Waynesboro closed session: THE AGENDA
Staunton West End workshops return!
STAUNTON – Staunton is calling for West End residents to tell the city what they would like to see happen in the community. On March 5, residents wanting to know more should come to the Irene Givens Administrative Building of Montgomery Hall Park.
The workshop will feature the results from the previous West End meeting in January, where dozens of residents told what the city and consultants for the project, EPR, P.C., what the area needs.
Some of challenges presented by residents last time included:
a lack of third places, a term referring to places people gather that are not home or work.
“golf course property can’t be used by the full community”
road quality
the streets are “pedestrian hostile”
“need small, local businesses” and “need to extend Staunton Downtown Development Association (SDDA) resources to West End businesses”
a “tent camp” for people who lack access to housing
Attendees were asked to place a sticker by adjectives they felt described the West End. The most stickers were placed by "economically depressed," "abandoned," "vehicle oriented," and "left behind."
“We are excited by the number of citizens getting involved and the energy being put into this planning process,” said Mayor Stephen Claffey in a press release. “Revitalization of the West End is important for all of Staunton and City Council wants everyone to have a chance to weigh in on the future of the area.”
