West Florida Public Libraries and Feeding the Gulf Coast serve ‘Meals for Youths’

West Florida Public Libraries will be serving free lunch for youths 18 years of age and younger through the "Meals for Youths" program this summer.

Meals will be offered at library locations throughout Escambia County through Aug. 9. Disabled individuals 19 years of age and older who participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the school year are also eligible to receive meals. In addition, WFPL will provide several summer reading challenges and programs to allow youth to stay engaged with educational activities.

The "Meals for Youth" program is sponsored by Feeding the Gulf Coast. Meals will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. at the following library branches:

  • Pensacola Library: Monday through Friday.

  • Century Library: Tuesday through Saturday.

  • Genealogy Library: Tuesday through Saturday.

  • Molino Library: Monday through Friday.

  • Southwest Library: Monday through Friday.

  • Tryon Library:  Monday through Friday.

  • Westside Library: Monday through Friday.

Feeding the Gulf Coast is a Feeding America affiliated food bank serving 24-counties throughout south Alabama, south Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle.

Retired assistant state attorney honored at Gulf Coast Kid’s House

Retired Assistant State Attorney Anne M. Patterson is being recognized for her contributions to justice for child victims of abuse at 4 p.m. Friday.

The prosecution wing is also being named after Patterson following a substantial donation to the Gulf Coast Kid's House.

The State Attorney’s Wing at the facility will be called the Anne M. Patterson, ASA Justice Wing. Patterson was critical in opening the Gulf Coast Kid’s House and forming the multidisciplinary response offered to children there. She worked with the State Attorney’s Office for over 35 years and remains an active supporter of GCKH.

Escambia County seeks volunteer for Housing Finance Authority

The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners is seeking Escambia County residents interested in volunteering to be considered for an appointment to the Escambia County Housing Finance Authority. Appointees serve without compensation.

The Escambia County Housing Finance Authority was established in accordance with Florida law. The authority’s duties are to assist in eliminating shortages of adequate housing, stop reoccurrence of slum conditions and stimulate employment and commerce. Knowledge in the area of labor, finance or commerce required. Authority members serve a four-year term of office. Financial disclosure is required.

Escambia residents interested in serving on the Escambia County Housing Finance Authority are asked to submit a resume and letter indicating their desire to serve by 5 p.m. June 1. Pen Air Federal Credit Union celebrates 2021 NOW winners

Pen Air Federal Credit Union recently celebrated the Wooton family as the winner of $5,000 and their 2021 NOW Program. The NOW Program is designed to guide three teams toward a better understanding of their income, expenses and how to foster healthier spending habits.

Teams are paired with a certified Pen Air Financial Counselor, who provides a personalized game plan and resources to help each family pay off debt and plan for a financially stable future. On average, the 2021 NOW teams increased their savings by $14,000 and decreased their debt by $8,000.

Applications to be part of Pen Air’s 2022 NOW program are open. Chosen teams will be paired with a certified counselor to navigate a seven-month journey toward increasing savings while decreasing debt.

Baptist Hospital is recruiting volunteers

Baptist Hospital is recruiting volunteers to provide assistance to patients, their families, visitors and staff in many areas of the hospital.

Baptist volunteers perform a number of duties throughout the hospital and medical office settings. Individual skills and interests are considered in matching a volunteer to a specific task. Opportunities include a variety of support roles in surgery waiting rooms, offices, patient care areas and at the information desk. Escorts to assist with wayfinding are also needed.
