West High staff member breaking up fight seriously injured, sent to hospital, officials say

A staff member trying to break up a fight among three students during lunch Thursday at West High School was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, school district spokesperson Susan Arensman said.

There were reports that a student was seriously injured, but she said that was not true.

A Sedgwick County Emergency Communications supervisor said one person with serious injuries was taken to the hospital; three others with minor injuries refused.

At 1:01 p.m., an officer at the high school put out the call to “start me a whole bunch of officers,” the supervisor said. The school was put in lockdown but that has since been lifted, Arensman said.

On social media, people reported that pepper spray and a knife had been possibly used in the incident. Arensman said around 2:30 p.m. that she had not heard either of those things. Just after 4 p.m., she emailed The Eagle to say that no knife was involved.
