LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Kevin Devon Sanders called Joshua Garcia to the Waterfront Apartments in West Lafayette on July 28, 2021, then — allegedly with the help of an accomplice — he robbed and hit Garcia while holding him at gunpoint.

Sanders, 23, admitted this during his hearing Wednesday in Tippecanoe Superior 1, where he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and a felony charge of carrying a handgun without a license.

Sanders also admitted he violated the conditions of his probation from a 2019 felony case.

Sanders' guilty pleas are part of an agreement with prosecutors, which includes that he will testify against his alleged accomplice, according to the plea.

Sanders, of West Lafayette, intended to plead guilty on June 30, but he balked when he learned that the possible sentences ranged from three to 22 years in prison.

A status hearing was scheduled for Wednesday to resolve where Sanders' case stood — plea agreement or trial at the end of the month.

Sanders went with the plea.

The court will formally accept the plea on Aug. 18, when Sanders is sentenced.

If Tippecanoe Superior Judge Randy Williams sentences Sanders to consecutive terms for the two crimes, he faces between three and 22 years in prison. However, if the judge orders the sentences to be served concurrently, Sanders faces between three and 16 years in prison.

For admitting he violated his probation, Sanders faces serving two years of a suspended sentence in his 2019 case for violating his probation, increasing the maximum sentence in prison.
