Voters in West Monroe soon will be asked to pass a tax that could pay for new equipment for three of the city's departments.

A 7.85-mill property tax supporting equipment purchases for police, fire and public works will be on the ballot for a special April 22 election.

If approved by voters, the millage will run for 10 years and will generate roughly $831,000 annually.

"This ad valorem millage is a dedicated pot of money that can be spent on capital tools and equipment," West Monroe Mayor Staci Mitchell said. "Things that allow the police department, the fire department and public works to do their job better as well as protect them."

If approved by voters, the property tax would result in an increase of $71 annually for city homeowners and an increase of $141 annually for businesses within the city.

"It's an investment in not only public safety but infrastructure here in the city," Mitchell said.
