West Morgan, other north Alabama schools receive false reports of shootings

Dec. 13—A false report of a shooting was made to West Morgan High School this morning, along with multiple other north Alabama schools, but once the report was determined to be false school went back into regular session.

The call, made from an Ohio area code, claimed a shooting was currently happening in the school.

Trinity Police Chief Randy Hughes said it was not a shooting threat, but a false report of a shooting. It was made at about 8:27 a.m.

"At West Morgan, school resource officers were in the building and quickly determined (the call) was false," the Morgan County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The SROs followed policy and secured West Morgan High so Trinity Police could come in and check the entire campus.

"We take every call like this very seriously because the kids' security is paramount," Hughes said.

At least five other north Alabama schools received false shooting threats this morning, said Morgan County sheriff's spokesman Mike Swafford, but all are back in session.

Decatur City Schools have not received any false reports, said spokeswoman Elizabeth Gentle.

According to news reports, schools in Huntsville, Scottsboro and Florence received similar calls.
