West Orange police officer shot while stopping Krauszer's robbery

An off-duty West Orange police officer was grazed by a bullet when he intervened in a robbery at a Krauszer's food store in a strip mall on South Valley Road Monday afternoon, according to the township police department.

As the officer attempted to halt the robbery, the suspect hit the officer with the gun and fired one shot, scraping the officer's scalp, police said.

It is not yet known whether the suspect was attempting to rob the store or individuals inside and whether or not they fled with any money from the robbery, Fagan added.

A 36-year-old East Orange man was arrested and charged with attempted murder and several other offenses, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office stated.

The officer was taken to University Hospital for the injury, which was not life-threatening.

Meanwhile, the investigation remains ongoing.
